Found an old fashioned, negligently, aligned-with-flow drain grate in King St this morning. The hard way. Fortunately no damage to self; bike or ego. Council notified
East side of King St between St Georges and Hay St, on the western edge of the King St carpark entry (c. 186 King St)
the culprit on Google Maps

I wonder if that's a demarcation issue? It seems a little off the road and into the building carpark exit.
I thought by and large most of those god-awful old, single slat direction grills going with the flow had gone the way of the dodo on public roads; it's mostly on private property like commercial car parks where I tend to still see them. There's still a number of the buggers along the commercial strip in Cannington. Admittedly though you don't need to fall in a hole to get to hell at Carousel.

Still roadside of the footpath so a council problem, I believe. I'm sure the council will respond quickly if they think it's not their problem.

The problem with this drain is there's no way to run the bars that doesn't create a hazard. One way, carpark users have a problem, the other way footpath users.
They'll have to replace it with a different type of grate.

Do an about-face on your Street View image and diagonally opposite is another intersection about 10 meters away.
In the laneway there's a much better grate with bars running in both directions.
In the street there's also a mesh type grate.
No excuses. It needs to be replaced.

Just needs flat bar welded at 90° to existing bars.

Or weld close spaces steel strapping in the cross direction. Works well enough when done properly.
Steel grating of any sort of course is often going to be a slip hazard in wet weather and too many grates are not level with the road. Does anyone have any practical (ie cheap) answers to addressing those issues?

Cudos to the CoP. Went past for the first time in a week today and they've rectified the situation with quite an innovative solution: a thin "overgrate" attached on top the vehicle grade grate.

Excellent result! And very glad you and your steed didn't get seriously damaged in the first place.
