Maybe it's victim blaming. But then maybe as much you are drawing a long bow in that conclusion. Media have been unnecessarily reporting on what women are wearing since, well, forever.

Or not. If he flees, I would expect he is blowing his last chance of putting extradition to rest. He has effectively destroyed his life already.

The Indian courts probably have very little patience left for him. If he'd stayed in Australia, he probably would have served his term and walked out of jail by now.trailgumby wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 9:08 amBunged Knee wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 5:55 amWhat a malingering person he is?

reckon that is just over $350 (AU) possibly considered a largish amount in a country with many with low incomes but for a family that could afford for Punneet Puneet to be a student in Australia and fight thru the courts I doubt if means anything much...as to surrendering passport that wasn't an obstacle to leaving Australia

20000 rupees is absolute peanuts unless one is in the lowest tier of labour (given that the family has already hired more than one lawyer, it's safe to assume they are something approaching middle class at least). Even a bribe for evading consequences for petty street crime, such as stealing a mobile phone, could be something like 10 000 rupees.antigee wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 4:37 pm"....Before being granted bail in the High Court of Delhi, he had to pay a surety of 20,000 rupees...."

Given the stakes, 20 000 rupees still equates to "nothing to lose by doing another runner." As such, I would be more surprised if he does turn up for his court hearing. Fully expecting from his parents yet another gormless expression of ignorance as to Puneet's whereabouts come Oct 17.
Tbh I suspect the journalists might have mistakenly dropped a zero ftom the surety bail .... but even then, 200 000 rupees is still fair game for doing a runner imho.

We'd like to think that the amount is large in the Indian context. However on a previous runner he sold his car for $8000. Back in 2015 his family had to post bail of $4,000. I'm afraid this latest bail is a token, even in India.antigee wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 4:37 pm"....Before being granted bail in the High Court of Delhi, he had to pay a surety of 20,000 rupees...."

Or not, regardless of whether or not he is staying put. Scheduled dates in the past have been nowhere near the actual dates. Apparently a product of a seriously overtaxed judicial system.trailgumby wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 9:08 amBunged Knee wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 5:55 amWhat a malingering person he is?

These dates seem to habitually be delayed. Does anyone have any further info on his next court date or any other information at all?
Edit 19Oct
Still seeing nothing in news reports

7 Feb is the next court appearance, according to the details above.
I couldn’t find any explanation why it was adjourned from Oct to Feb.
I presume someone lost their pencil or forgot they’d promised to pick up the dry cleaning or something

I think there seldom is. I've understood that India has a horribly overloaded system but they can be persistent. I hope they will continue their persistence they have so far shown to date in the case of Puneet.

I too was thinking about the duration. We need the PM to talk to their PM about itCyclophiliac wrote: ↑Fri Jan 06, 2023 11:20 pm14 years since the incident occurred. If he hadn't fled justice, he would have been out of jail years ago.

Well, the 7th has come and gone. And the Delhi High Court web page remains stubbornly unresponsive. Is it just me that can't access it?Thoglette wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 3:01 pmI forgot to include a link to the Delhi Highcourt
