Thanks for the detailed response! Frame number is in the original post, stamped on the rear droput. "7M 11398" from what I can gather that should be 1947 and manufactured in Melbourne?tedsbikes wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2019 10:51 amThe tacked on bridge looks like it was made for an old Centre pull brake from the 30s, the name of which escapes me now. Some were made with the wording "warranty made in England" and they used a double ended cable with a builtin adjusting bolt. These brakes were much longer than the normal side pulls around that time e.g Monitor and we're heavy and not very effective.
This frame looks like a proper track frame - no (original) rear brake provision nor any braze-on pump clip fittings as seen on the factory production 5 star bikes. However, this one was probably made in one of the Malvern Star factories. Can you check the rear drop outs, and/or the seat lug, to see if there is a frame number .
My suggestion would be to remove the later brake bridge and just fit a front brake with a fixed gear.

I've picked up this nice example of a Malvern Star Trailrider which I believe to be from between 85-87 according to this blog: http://bloggingadeadhorse.com/supermax2 ... orsCat.php which as a load of other old catalogs too.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/LWoPKdfzsmVwdCrZ9
Seems to be in very original condition, complete with the leather strap between seat tube and top tube as pictured in the catalog.
Shimano RS Rear Derailleur, Shimano FE front Derailleur and friction shifters. 12 speed...
Interested to know if others own these or if anyone can shed any more light on this model.
I've had a look for the serial number (under bottom bracket, rear dropouts) but can't seem to find it anywhere...
Cheers,

Today I took the first step towards a restoration of sorts and started pulling it apart. It mostly came apart quite easily but I have stopped for the moment to look at the best way to get the headset and forks out.
This was the start of the day.

I own what I think is a 1943 Malvern Star which I'm particularly interested in due to its reference to Don Bradman. The information provided to me when purchased was:
ORIGINAL 1943 'THE DON' FIXED/FREE WHEEL BICYCLE. 54 CM, 28" TYRES, FLEET SADDLE, TRACK HANDLE BARS, NEW CHAIN AND GRIPS TO MATCH PAINT WORK. STRAIGHT AND RUST FREE. SERIAL NUMBER 3M 11569. 3M = 1943.
A NUMBER OF BIKES WERE DEDICATED TO SIR DONALD BRADMAN BY A LOCAL MELBOURNE CYCLE BUILDER, INCLUDING THIS ONE.
I'm particularly interested in the "Melbourne Cycle Builder". Does anyone have any information on this?
Any information will be appreciated. Thanks, Simon

Seems so, although I have never seen that one another bike before. I am waiting for more photos with a better angle of that.

greetings from Margate , Kent. UK.
Just wanted to let you know I picked up a Sprint12 today, 25" frame Tange 900 base spec I guess . It was living in Margate - seems a long way to bring a basic racer but was supplied from a dealer in Sidney, see- https://photos.app.goo.gl/5rVbBnQUBdag65r8A
So thats around 17,020 kilometers or 10,575 miles.
I will look after it and try to upgrade where I can . Cant wait to ride along the North Kent coast (colder than NSW sadly )
Have a look at the pics here : https://photos.app.goo.gl/fFWdoivSLkZjtMK96

It's an early 1980s AL12 with a ChroMo frame. I kept the headset and replaced everything else. It's now got a Shimano 13/23 Claris drive train, shifters, brakes, 42/52 lite-pro cranks and Shimano Tiagra rims.

The Don was a shop in Koornang Rd Carnegie between the railway line and Dandenong Rd.
Mortal enemy of Herb Rolfe whose shop was just the other side of the railway line. (According to Herb’s son John).
John says The Don didn’t build their own bikes.
That’s about all I’ve got.

But to be honest it doesn't need too much doing to it, the frame and mudguards will just get a coat of preservation wax, the seat a wipe of Proofide and the chrome I will derust.
The person I bought the bike off got it from a deceased estate sale and paid for it to be rebuilt and the wheels respoked.
It would seem in the 1950s the bike had its hubs replaced to fit a Sturmey archer BFC drum brake to the front wheel and a AW hub to the rear to make it 3 speed but with only front brakes.
I live in the hills so need rear brakes too, so will hunt down a period correct Sturmey Archer AB 3 speed drum brake for the rear hub and get the wheel rebuilt, but will be leaving everything as is. The only other thing I will need to do is find a nice Lucas Bell for it.
Even the tool bag was full of period correct tools.
For those interested it's serial number is 6M7190.
I'm personally over the moon of the condition of this bike, it even has new tyres on it!
Enjoy the rest of the photos.

Haha! When I saw my motorbike was also in the picture I decided to leave it in as I knew it would have people asking questions.
It is a 1961 BSA C15, I've had it for about 10 years and between myself and my dad we rebuilt it from the ground up.
The other bicycle is my 1930's Kookaburra, see my post on 'A rusty Kookaburra' for more info on it.

The brand of the saddle is 'Bell' they were made in Melbourne from the 1940s I think to the early 1960s.
Follow this link for a bit more info.
As far as I know they were used on Malvern Stars and Speedwells.

I've read about the Kookaburra, thanks for the info on the Beeesa. It isn't a model I was familiar with but now I am. Of course I'm now likely to remember this model and forget some important things I should remember.Tmuir wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 1:29 pmHaha!
