Opinions sought on Greengrocer Cycling in Goulburn, NSW

Postby GrumpySmurf » Fri Jan 28, 2011 8:30 pm

I am hoping to get opinions / reference from people who have had dealings with Greengrocer Cycles in Gourlburn. I am over in Perth and is considering a large purchase from there sight unseen. So, if you live nearby and have had dealings with them (good or bad or otherwise), please feel free to PM.

TIA

How did you go with the purchase? Get what you want?

I recently bought a bike online from these guys with a few mods to suit my needs. Correspondence was great until the money exchanged hands. Whilst I eventually got my bike (almost 1 month after I was told I would get it), some of the mods hadn't been included. After many emails/texts/phone calls to rectify the situation I have finally given up and accepted the bike as is. A completely frustrating experience. Strongly recommend against buying from these guys remotely.

Cheers

I live in Gbn and my next bike will come from there. Unfortunately due to a renovation running WAAAY overtime and a tad over budget I have to put back the purchase. Damnit I really wanted a new bike to kick off the next season of racing!

I know and get along well with the staff. Unfortunately the owner spreads himself really thin and some parts of the process suffer. I'm lucky enough that with the place only a block from my work I can poke my head in and plant the odd bomb when need be.

The bike shop really needs a good manager and it would make a ton IMO.

As expressed above there are bad experiences and good. I reckon you'd struggle to find a shop that doesn't have both but like I said, I live in Gbn and know the people so I would give them more leeway than an internet purchaser would.

I ordered a ham and mustard sandwich last time I was there. Whoever was making it PILED on a ridiculous amount of mustard, it was extremely hot mustard, the type that you only need a very small amount of, so it was hardly edible even after scraping as much as I could off. A mate of mine ordered the same thing and his was the same, he wasn't able to eat it.

My experience echoes yours. Although I felt I got a good deal, and they were nice to deal with whilst the money was changing hands, it does take a lot of chasing up and waiting to get all the other little details right. I too gave up on a couple $$$'s worth of parts that never eventuate.

My advise, if they have the EXACT bike with the EXACT parts you want, then they will be good to buy from. I would also be wary if you are not n the shop itself.

I don't know how these guys treat their customers in store, but I have dealt with them as a supplier. Getting payment from them for items they order was nigh impossible - I have been dealing with bicycle shops for about 4 years and I have never (never, never, ever) found a slower payer. This suggests that they don't have the best relationship with their suppliers, hence why guy_sonia above waited so long to get an order. They might be great in-store (I'll never know), but I'd never buy from them remotely.

I have purchased a couple of bikes there. There have never been any problems or issues. Great price, great bikes. Bikes were what they had in stock (no mods). They delivered the last one to Canberra for free as they had someone heading over this way!

FarToomanybikes, not sure why this old thread got dragged out, but haven't you heard the bad news? The shop had been burnt down :(

Visited them on the way through to Canberra last year. They are probably a bike shop you would want to visit in person. Lots and lots of interesting stock and very keen to chat to you and help work out what you might actually need vs what you want. They were also happy to do a modified setup for me to test ride in the streets around the shop. I was only tyre kicking though so I didn't want to waste their time.

Food service was pretty slow though.

They're probably on the NBN so news travels slowly or not at all.

Greengrocer Cycling Goulburn Review
Don’t go near them. I bought a bike interstate and was shafted well and truly. I felt lucky to finally get the bike after being stuffed around by a dubious, condescending character called Con, a very fitting name for him as it later transpired. I found myself doing a hell of a lot of chasing once money had changed hands and any perceived saving on the bike was lost threefold by the stress caused as this has been by far my worst retail experience to date.

It took multiple attempts to obtain a receipt of purchase from this trader and the promised manual and warranty card never came. On top of that I had to drive a four hour round trip to collect the bike due to his ever changing delivery arrangements. This was unfortunately only the tip of the iceberg however…

It got dramatically worse a month later when I was glancing through my bank statements and by chance found that this business had stored my credit card details and a week later had debited a further $3,000 from my bank account effectively doubling the purchase price of the bike to $6,000. When I phoned Con to for an explanation he blamed another staff member for the ‘innocent mistake’. At no time was I offered been offered the courtesy of an apology.

As ever I was the one left doing the chasing regarding the refund. I felt that the matter wasn’t being taken seriously but promises to return the money immediately ensued.
Despite Cons empty promises, it took numerous subsequent phone calls and emails threatening legal action to finally get the $3000 returned to my account several weeks later.

The whole experience has been a stressful nightmare. I have had the inconvenience of cancelling my credit card to protect my remaining funds and the whole experience has left a bitter taste in my mouth.

I would suggest that if you have made a credit card purchase over the phone in good faith as I did with Greengrocer cycling to check your bank statements carefully and consider cancelling your card.

Furthermore I would recommend to anyone who has a grievance with Greengrocer cycling to stand your ground and demand the service you have after all paid for. There are some fantastic suppliers out there who provide an honest professional service and are worthy of support. Unfortunately this is not one of them.
Happy cycling!

My experience with Greengrocer Cycling was very stressful and unpleasant with many arguments about a returned bike over the refund, freight costs, who was responsible and the amount. Communication and responsiveness was poor. Fair Trading were involved. If you use this business, be careful what you agree to. Make sure you have a very detailed invoice that reflects your purchase exactly and documents any agreements you negotiate in writing.

Fixed this...

My experience with Greengrocer Cycling has been stress-less and pleasant with no arguments or discussions on who was responsible and the amount. Communication and responsiveness was fine. Fair Trading were not needed or involved. If you are this business, be careful with who you deal with. Make sure you use that very detailed invoice that reflects your sale exactly and documents any agreements you negotiate in writing.
