So will read Monday's newspaper headlines, after my mum takes me on this ride tomorrow. This is part of our preparation for Cycle Queensland. Mum obviously didn't read the memo where they said things like "Seriously, this the flattest ever Cycle Queensland". My interpretation of this is "meh, there'll be no hills, why train on hills, sounds like an unpleasant way to spend the day". Mum's interpretation of this is "hey, just because they say there's no hills doesn't mean we can't train as if there are! Hill climbing sounds like a fabulous way to spend the day!".
I predict that tomorrow's ride will consist mostly of me whinging, mum rolling her eyes, me going at a snail's pace, mum rolling her eyes, mum leaving me in her dust after getting sick of going slow for me, me rolling my eyes, mum whinging at me that I really should be better prepared by now, me rolling my eyes, and finally, each of us strangling the other with a bicycle chain. If we're lucky, one or the other (or both) of us will get a puncture too.

We did half of the planned route, and it damn near killed me. We got to around the 30Km mark when I just couldn't do any more climbing. The hill that did me in was a 2Km monster that offered absolutely no reprieve. Most hills I've climbed in the past consist of a climb, a bit of flat, some more climbing, a bit more flat etc.. so you get some rest. Not this one. After about 1Km of stop-start climbing, I declared that I was done, and turned back. Mum rode up to the top then rode back.
The ride back down that hill was bone-chilling, both because of the temperature (somewhere around arctic) and because of the fear factor. Tight, twisting turns? Check. Potholes? Check. Poor visibility due to low light? Check. Cars tailing me with nowhere for either of us to go? Check. TERMINAL VELOCITY?! OMGosh. Check. I hit somewhere around 70Kph before my brakes finally started to slow me down. I couldn't read the actual numbers on the computer due to the tears in my eyes. Were they from the cold wind blowing, or from fear? Let us not speculate. Let us simply marvel that I am alive to tell the tale.
The ride back was mercifully flat. We stopped at the Maccas at Chinderah, where we were set upon by a family of magpies. They didn't swoop us, they sat around us (literally.. we were surrounded) and sang magpie songs and begged for food. Talk about the easy life. I was making friends with one magpie when my mum decided she'd had enough of them and did her best scarecrow impersonation (complete with extra yelling and arm-waving). The magpies freaked out and took off.
And to thank my mum for her efforts, they swooped me on the way out. Thanks very much, mum!!!!

How about a mother/daughter pic

Don't think I have one! Nothing recent, anyway. I've never been one much for photos. Maybe I'll take some happy snaps while we're on Cycle Queenslandmikesbytes wrote:How about a mother/daughter pic
