Recently i have been riding after work with a backpack. Approx 20 Ks. Friday after my ride i had a pain in my left lower back (the back of my hip bone), im not sure if it is because of the pack or bike fit. Anyone had similar problem or am i just getting "too old".

It's the bag. I get the same if I take my laptop when I commute. I figure it throws my position off significantly and causes me pain. I try to leave it at home/work when I can because of it.

+1...kinda,
ie its the bag when it gets
too heavy. No doubt what amounts to "too heavy" is a peraonsal thing. I also get a sore back once the bag gets too heavy. Don't have panniers so I toss the bob trailer on if it is going to be one of those days (laptop is OK, but if I also have a fair bit of paperwork or other stuff, then it is time for the trailer). Quite enjoy a commute with the trailer if it isn't too regular. Great incentive for leaving work at work

Is the backpack packed evenly? No hard lumps? A small irregularity you don't notice over a few kms will become torture over long distances. Make sure the straps are snug but not overtight, a loose pack bouncing around will tire you out badly.
