1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
Postby Hebden » Fri Apr 24, 2009 10:18 am
Any details Alex? Is it still on? There were some details on the Cycling NSW website, but the link isn't working anymore.

All the officials have been appointed and the UCI Chief Commissaire will fly in from Melbourne on 26 April. Kevin Young from CNSW and Bill Clinch CA have made sure everything is in place for a trouble free attempt.
Some of my Bicisport buddies are going to assist by warming up the track from 3pm prior to my attempt. I will take to the track to warm tyres and Alex will collect some last minute data.
Dave Willmott has had to postpone his World Record attempts at the 200 and 500m so I have moved my start time to 3.30pm. The distance to beat is 45.641 kms set by Jason Sprouse of USA in 2007-just short of 183 laps.
All being well I will have that record by Sunday 26 April at 4.30pm.

There are the NSW criterium championships being held at Olympic Park that morning before the attempt but there is no other track racing on. Officals will be coming over from SOP to DGV and we have a UCI official flying in from Adelaide for the day to oversee it (it's a requirement for official record attempts). Also the ASADA people for the drug tests will be there. And the people to run the electronic timing and starting gates. It's quite a complex (and expensive) logistical challenge.JV911 wrote:any other events on?Alex Simmons/RST wrote:Yes, it is definitely on!!
The velodrome has been specially booked for this hour record attempt.
I doubt the DGV will have catering but the handle bar tavern may have food on, not sure what times the bistro operates.
The plan is for a celebration beer afterwards though!

Warmer = Thinner air = Less wind resistance = Faster = Further.colafreak wrote:Yeah? How come warmer is better?

Basically that's it.Burt 'Pigeon Racer' Jones wrote:Warmer = Thinner air = Less wind resistance = Faster = Further.colafreak wrote:Yeah? How come warmer is better?
Air density is a sizeable factor that determines how fast we can go for a given power output.
The higher the air density, the slower we go for a given power.
Air density is lowered by:
An increase in altitude
An increase in temperature
A reduction in barometric pressure
An increase in humidity (although this doesn't have much of an impact compared to the above three)
For example, drop the temp by 5C (from say 25 to 20C) for same barometric pressure, and that will cost Jayson nearly 300 metres.
If air pressure goes up 10 hPa (say from 1010 to 1020 hPa) for same temp that will cost Jayson 150 metres.

Does temperature also affect available oxygen levels and therefore power production? Does this offset the increased drag to any degree?Alex Simmons/RST wrote:Basically that's it.Burt 'Pigeon Racer' Jones wrote:Warmer = Thinner air = Less wind resistance = Faster = Further.colafreak wrote:Yeah? It is not so easy to just pick whenever you like given all the ducks that have to be lined up. For example, if you can't get the relevant officials, you can't do it. They are heavily committed to the race calendar as it is.sogood wrote:Why not time the record attempt in the warmer months? Where's the intersect b/n physical comfort and aero benefit?
You get to narrow it down to 2 or 3 possible dates and go with what you think provides both reasonable conditions but also enough time to prepare the athlete and work around other race commitments.
I would suggest that ~24C is about right for a long effort like this.
for sprint stuff, then as hot as you can stand.

Think Jayson was a bit knackered too - judging by the stumble at the stairs near the track exit.NotFlyingScot wrote:Very impressive. I was exhausted just watching!JV911 wrote:i hear we have a new record holder!

Congrats to Jayson and Alex. Fantastic consistency in his lap times, and was threatening the record from the get go.
What's the official result ? Trackside supporters were saying about 2.4 km more than previous record ? That would be a stunning result, and the only thing more stunning would be the lack of publicity.

Mens Masters 2 category, new world record.
Previous record 45.641km (Jason Sprouse, USA).
That's 2.676km further.
Coach is delighted.
I will do an analysis and write up in due course but am kinda busy this week ahead.
Well this wasn't about publicity, it was about performance.wombatK wrote:and the only thing more stunning would be the lack of publicity.

A bit surprised there weren’t more people there though, I was with a group of Triathletes in the stands and apart from us and NFS it was near empty, would have expected a few more cyclists to come and see the feat.
