Wahoo Elemnt Ace

Postby Mr Purple » Sat Dec 07, 2024 9:05 am

Anyone keeping an eye on this product? It's almost hilarious how badly they messed it up by all reports. I'm going to borrow most of this information from DCRainmaker and you should absolutely check out his review.

Key point number one - the size.

I have a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt V2. It's entirely adequately sized. Why would I want an Ipad on my handlebars? Apparently it's big enough and heavy enough they're expecting it to snap mounts, and it's unlikely you'll ever be able to hang a GoPro below it.

Key point number two - the price. I've been receiving advertising for this behemoth all week. It costs $999.95. That's absolutely crazy.

Key point number three - nothing on it seems to work:
- Strava Live segments don't currently work (this is 90% of my use of my head unit).
- Live tracking doesn't work.
- No full route elevation view.
- They've removed the screw so the pros can't bolt it to their bike and claim it as total bike weight (not that this worries me).
- The built in bell doesn't work from the map screen.
- It weighs 208g.

The wind sensor is sort of interesting I suppose? I can't see them selling many of these without a huge rejig.

It's annoying - I was a Wahoo convert with my Bolt V1, but it seems every update to the software on the V2 makes it worse. Yesterday it took 2km to find a satellite, so short changed me 2km on my ride. And it never seems to automatically upload rides to Strava anymore, always needs to be done manually.

Consoles/PCs, phones, watches, head units, TV's etc... all the hardware is pretty solid (cost vs quality) so the issues these days is generally down to the software reliability. Not much launches now with a fully baked foundation. Release now, fix incrementally during the next xx months/years.

Older and failing eyesight here. My close up vision has declined. A larger screen helps there. That is getting up there in size though. I run an edge 1030+. Wouldn't go smaller but the display size is adequate now. Mapping is one area it helps, as is more fields on one screen. Using mapping less now that I have my gravel routes sorted however.

Still happy with my Bolt V1, still going strong after almost 5 years. Can easily increase the font size so I can see it without my reading glasses, so I am not gassing for a larger computer.

Well, this is a lot of the problem I have with Wahoo.

Brought to you by the word of the year:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification

Every software update intended to make things better somehow makes things worse.

I can see a larger screen being useful for navigating on gravel. Though I can see having separate routing options for 'gravel' versus 'mountain bike' being far more useful. That's really more a Strava thing than a Wahoo thing, though - it can't seem to tell the difference between a gentle gravel fire trail and carrying your bike up and down crevasses.

I have 10 data fields on the main page I use on my edge. Not seeing that with my eyes on a smaller screen.
Put the edge 1030+ through the washing machine too, for a full cycle  Still fine

Very underwhelmed by the Ace, not that I'm looking for a new computer

More than happy with my Roam v2.

Only thing that would be better is that screen matches the bezel size. Pretty simple.
