She's Baaaaaaack!!

Postby brumby33 » Sun Sep 15, 2024 8:09 am

Well I just read that that Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore 78 is back in her position as Lord Mayor of Sydney for a Historic 6th Term.....Amazing!!

There was a concentrated effort to get her out of Town Hall but no-one ever spoke of fresh ideas and the votes came her way.

Whether you like her or not, you'd have to admire her for doing that job at the age of 78, and she's been really proactive on Cycling paths and active Transport in the City and so no more concerns at this point on losing them and more confidence that more will be done.

I don't know about how Melbourne is going to go with their Mayoral vote as there's been talk that if a certain person gets voted in, they are going to start ripping out cycling infrastructure in the City. Good luck!!

Cyclist naysayers arriving in three, two, one...

Good that she is back - deserved.

Mind you no cycling infrastructure is safe, all that is needed is a conservative government to return and they can be ripped up right away for providing more car parking. Any potential Duncan Gay Mk.II will sort that out quickly with a bit of help from friends in the conservative media.

Yeah well at least her old arc rival Alan Jones is no longer prevalent on the Sydney air-waves but there are many there like his replacement Ben Fordham that's not exactly a Sydney Cycling supporter. I remember his rant on the Moore Park Road and i'm not sure on his take by the recent construction of Oxford St Cycle path seeing I've been out of Sydney for 2 years.

By the time she gets knocked off her perch in another 4 years, many of the talking heads that have any pull will be retired so if Duncan Gay Mk11 does get the Transport Gig in the future, he may not have the backing that they once had.

Whilst I hated MP Andrew Constance for Privatising the Bus Network in Sydney, I will applaud his actions on providing pop-up bike lanes to promote active Transport in Sydney during the Pandemic, this has to be recognised as a positive move for a State MP which was totally the opposite of Duncan Gay's movement in the 2,000s.

Jan Gehl, a Man from Denmark now 87, is still at it, designing bikeways around the world including Australia.

The light rail in the Sydney CBD whilst bashed for well over budget building, Business people jumping up and down about destroying their businesses was Clover's idea and she got the Premier at the time Christine Keneally to sign off on it.....many years later, it's up and running and whilst a major skeptic myself at the time, am a firm believer on how the light rail has transformed the City. It Just doesn't feel that long ago when I was driving buses up and down George Street where the light rail now runs, it's a terrific system not without it's gremlins at first but i think they have them pretty much ironed out now, in tourist season, the light rail in Sydney is chockers!!

Very well deserved, wish it was for another 20 years rather than only 4. I am sure some of her opponents are nice people but after much "talk" about new ideas from them it turns out they had none. I am most disappointed that other alleged progressive groups seemed to be directing preferences to Liberals before the truly progressive Clovers and some of these "progressive" groups were as opposed to cycleway expansion as are the Liberals and their running-dogs.
