What to do about minor cracks on rims?

Postby bridgepepper » Sat Feb 10, 2024 12:49 pm

Hi everyone,

I've recently noticed some minor cracks around the spoke nipples on my Scott Syncros alloy disc rims. Below are a couple of close-up photos showing the affected areas. The cracks appear to be on the plastic surface material near the spoke nipples (unclear if the cracks are also present in the underlying alloy).

From what I understand, these rims are pretty sturdy, so I'm hoping this might just be superficial damage. However, I'm aware that any cracking around spoke nipples can be a red flag and potentially lead to rim failure.

Any advice appreciated.

Start looking for a new rim, they are cracks in the rim wall, and eventually the nipples will pull through.

As the rim continues to degrade you'll find the wheel going out of true more frequently as the spokes lose tensionn.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I wouldn't have called them minor cracks.
The rim is roo ted it seems to me.
Look at the gap around the spoke nipples!

I don't understand why this question is being asked! :? That is toast and there is no sugar coating the response to those cracks. Get a new rim or new wheel, whatever is the cheapest way out.
