Website Maintenance - Tuesday 6 Feb - 8pm (8 hours) Complete

Postby AUbicycles » Tue Feb 06, 2024 7:48 pm

Due to complete website maintenance, bicycles.net.au and the forums will not be available.

---

Update: Very tricky business but the forum and main site have been updated and appear to be stable.

In theory, there are no changes to the forum (just updated software) however if you spot issues, please report them here.

It is possible that you may need to empty your browser cookies and cache for bicycles.net.au which I recommend if you spot an issue.

Thanks for your patience!

This should clear up (probably some database cleanups I have been doing... 4GB database)
Likely that everyone will need to log-in again and possible that the login is a bit shaky for a day or two (I experienced this... usually settles after a day).

Yes... I am also seeing the large ads. Fact is that we need some to cover the growing hosting costs, shouldn't be any overlay type ads, but some of the ones at the top are a bit much.

What a big turn off that this site is advertising a lot of ads that don't relates to cycling????

Image

I will be off this forum for a day or 2.
ID please? What ID? My seat tube ID is 27.2mm or 31.6mm depending on what bikes I ride today.thanks...

Sent you a pm that may help. :)

As Christopher has said, the ads pay for the hosting costs.
I guess the alternative is no forum.

Thanks. I tried as you stated but it's still the same on my mobile phone.

I know about the hosting costs but that's way too many non cycling related ads that I will never click on it.

Many ads relate to individual behaviour online.it is known as retargeting. If you see holiday adds… or insurance, they know something.

I agree that some of these new ad formats are too much. When a change is made it is ‘wait and see’ so tank you for the screenshots. (Please be patient as I tighten the reigns).

Unfortunately I can’t control it to show bike only ads. It is a pity though the cyclinv industry was generally reluctant to advertise directly.

In context, the hosting costs were always a limitation and this year have climbed massively that much that it puts the viability of the entire site in question.

If that is a discussion of interest, can set up a topic in the forum feedback section.

I understand why there have been login issues. Many where getting a message "Too many login attemps" including me. This is tricky and I have changed a setting that should resolve - thought it may need some more work. This is based on the hosting environment and upgrade that 'broke' it.

On the ads, already making some restrictions on these. Please give it a little time to update.

I keep being logged out and also says that I've been banned because of my IP address. :?:

I have also sent a PM, so it's probably better to send me an email with the way things are going.

On iPhone I get a warning that the site is not secure.

In the URL bar is says Not Secure - bicycles.net.au

Cache and cookies have been cleared. This happens irrespective of being on WiFi or the mobile 4G connection.

I also cannot use the stored login credentials because of that.

Also on mobile I found the adverts so intrusive that it was hard to read forum topics. The adverts took up nearly all the screen room so it was very easy to scroll past and miss replies to a topic. I understand they pay the bills so happy to live with them.

Okay, seems to have resolved - I went to the main website link (away from the forum) then returned back to the forum. Now shows secure. :?

I had the login issue yesterday, but now it's fine.

One other odd one that I get now is the 'Notifications'.

Previously, I'd only get the notifications if someone quoted me in a reply, now I get them even for threads that I've never commented on :?: :?: :?:

Is there a setting I need to change ?

EDIT : Changed an item in User Control Panel, so hopefully fixed it 8)

On iPhone 15 Pro in portrait mode with Safari the edit post drop down is broken. It doesn’t do anything.

You have to rotate to landscape to see the buttons to edit or remove a post.

Why do I waste time to input my log ins and I thought that it had been fixed? I did cleared the cache when I log off.

It came up after I tried 2 attempts to log in.

Thanks mate, I appreciate your efforts in keeping the forum going - it's a fantastic resource. Can't be fun putting so much of your own time effort and money into the site, and then having to fix issues on the fly like in this thread. I hope everyone else here also is grateful to have this place.

On a couple of other forums I visit, a few users chip in to help with hosting costs, etc. It's a totally voluntary thing and no one is forced to do so. Maybe an idea for the future?
