Hi all, I want to do Sydney to Melbourne over the Chrissy break. Is one week with a couple of rest days in the middle realistic?
I am quite fit and have just done a 288km ultra
I am looking for any tips or advice for going the coastal route as I won't to be able to swim to cool off the muscles

Not sure if this is a tip, trick or advice but the princes highway from Kiama to Bega ( and what I have seen but not biked for a bit into Eden) has had *most/ some of the pot holes and road shoulder crumblings repaired so biking is less stressful with vehicles not zig zagging and zag zigging to avoid the worst of them.
Beware of the short tempered late afternoon holiday traffic over xmas and think of very early morning starts
The south coast temps are up a few degrees this year so stick to the coastal off the highway roads when you can, is slower and longer as can have more hills but much more scenic with plenty of spots to stop and even camp.
Not sure where your start point in Sydney is but try starting your trip in touring the south coast by using the train to waterfall. Much less angst than riding thru the Shire
* correct for about 73 hours starting ....now

Have a look at the route maps on the NSW Coast Cycle Trail website
https://www.nswcoastcycle.com/
I particularly draw your attention to the route to get around Wollongong to Kiama mainly on bike paths. The actual route not well signposted so use the map. Also I'd catch the train to Cronulla and the ferry to Bundeena where I'd start the ride.
