Q: ebike under 20kg excluding battery?

Postby CR15 » Tue Jul 18, 2023 2:30 pm

Hi. New poster here, hope this is not a repost, sorry in advance if it is. Thanks for your help! :)

I'm looking for recommendations for an ebike that I can take on NSW long distance trains, which means it has to be under 20kg, excluding a removable battery that I will pack separately.

From the NSW Transport website
https://transportnsw.info/travel-info/u ... -trainlink

  • Push bicycles are accepted on NSW TrainLink services
  • Bicycle must be contained in a bicycle box to protect the bicycle.
  • Bicycle box must be no larger than 135cm long x 80cm high x 24cm wide.
  • The container needs to be less than 20 kg in weight to be accepted.
  • Folding bicycles must be packed in a protective cover and be no larger than 79cm long x 59cm high x 36cm wide.

Frankly, you should walk away from any e-bike that is not under 20kg sans batteries

For reference, my old bomb-proof, fully equipped steel tourer weighs less than 15kg.

I own a 2023 Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite in size M.

It does not have a removable battery but stock from the dealer it weighed in at 19.78kg on my hang scales - that's with the battery included but no paraphernalia like pedals, cages lights etc

Fits your criteria? Maybe too long in the wheelbase.......... remove the front wheel and pack side by side?

I ditched the heavy OEM MTB tyres for lighter gravel tyres, switched the drop seatpost to a carbon post and got the weight down to 17.65kg incl. pedals, lights, saddle bag, bottle cages fitted etc
