Pedal Power ACT calls for more infrastructure, lower speeds

Postby Thoglette » Wed May 03, 2023 8:34 am

ABC Online reports
ACT cycling group Pedal Power calls for 30kph speed zones to make Canberra suburbs safer
In its submission ahead of the ACT budget, Pedal Power ACT made a number of recommendations to improve the city's amenity for bike riders.

The group has said their primary goal is to improve Canberra's cycle paths by introducing more of them and extending those that already exist.

But they also raised the idea of lowering speed limits, a move they said had been implemented in European cities with positive results with regard to safety.

From my perspective Canberra is already quite good for cycling, although it was a long time ago. Maybe if it gets a little better it can show others how cycling is an advantage to traffic management.
"People feel nervous being closer to traffic and want to see more separated cycle lanes – whether that's physically separated on the edge of the road, or completely not on the road.
Lowering speed limits helps this. A car passing at 10km/h faster than you is a lot less unsettling than 30-50km/h.

A few ACT city and town BDs now have 24 hour 40KMPH zones

40 km/h in town centres
There are 18 group centres in the ACT with 40 km/h speed limits. Group centres with 40 km/h precincts are at: Amaroo, Calwell, Charnwood, Chisholm, Conder, Curtin, Dickson, Erindale, Hawker, Jamison, Kaleen, Kambah, Kingston, Kippax, Manuka, Mawson, Wanniassa and Weston.

The 40 km/h speed limits are in place on a fulltime basis (24 hours a day, seven days a week). Research indicates that the introduction of a 40 km/h speed area can significantly reduce the risk of death for vulnerable road users.

Could be just me but when you bike on the roads, walk or even run with the dog in these places it does feel safer and even quieter - think the issue is drivers do tend to keep looking away from the road and the car speedo to make sure they are under that number

The speed camera in Civic snagged quite a few.
