A former top police officer in South Australia and the Northern Territory has been identified as the victim of a bicycle crash in Adelaide's east yesterday.
Paul White, 72, was an assistant commissioner with South Australian police before serving as the Northern Territory police commissioner for eight years, until 2009.
He also served as South Australia's liquor and gambling commissioner.
South Australian police said Mr White, who lived in Glenunga, died at the scene after crashing at the intersection of Portrush Road and Myrona Avenue in Glen Osmond about 10:25am on Sunday.
A 61-year-old driver from St Georges is assisting police with their investigation.
Northern Territory police Acting Commissioner Murray Smalpage said: "We extend our deepest sympathy to Mr White's family and friends during this difficult time."
South Australia police Senior Constable Matt Brown said: "Our condolences go to his family and friends and all that he served with, not just here, but also in the Northern Territory."
Five people have died on South Australia's roads so far this year, three of them car drivers and one a motorcyclist.

Sadly and almost predictably, he was killed by a left-turning truck.P!N20 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 6:27 pmCyclist killed in West Melbourne: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-02-02/ ... /101922614

Instead of a left-turn ban, the shared path should just be updated so it's practical to use. Any decent shared path would be uninterrupted by roads, i.e. go below/above them. A good Melbourne example of this is the Koonung Creek Trail, which has almost no level crossings with roads.AdelaidePeter wrote: ↑Tue Feb 07, 2023 2:06 pmSadly and almost predictably, he was killed by a left-turning truck.P!N20 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 6:27 pmCyclist killed in West Melbourne: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-02-02/ ... /101922614

A 79-year-old woman from the ACT who was driving a car that collided with a truck at Two Wells, and a 49-year-old Trott Park man who fell from his bicycle at Happy Valley, have also died in the past week.

Not suspicious at all. Just lack of care, lack of responsibility, from people and the government to make things better“It is sort of – if you were suspicious – you would call it a curse, but it is just life. It just shows how suddenly things can change.”

Whilst I’ve ridden down Flagstaff Hill Rd (when it also used to be known as Education Rd) and yes it’s steep as, but not sure why they’ve deemed it unsafe apart from steep ??AdelaidePeter wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2023 3:23 pmA cyclist, who was critically injured in a solo crash going downhill on Flagstaff Hill Road (in Adelaide's southern suburbs) on March 22, has sadly died. https://www.police.sa.gov.au/sa-police- ... darlington
There has been a lot of chatter on social media about how unsafe this piece of infrastructure is. There is even a story in the local Murdoch rag ('A 57-year-old rider has died in hospital after crashing on a segment of a bike track labelled a “death trap” by fellow riders'), but it is paywalled.

If you haven't done it for a while, they are talking about a separated bike lane which was added for the bottom 200 metres or so on the downhill stretch towards South Road, which they did at the same time as they widened Flagstaff Hill Road. I have driven that road many times (though only a couple of times since the upgrade) but never ridden it. Complaints about that separated lane include too narrow, debris on it from poor drainage, and too easy to hit the concrete barrier or sign as you enter it.MichaelB wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2023 8:44 pmWhilst I’ve ridden down Flagstaff Hill Rd (when it also used to be known as Education Rd) and yes it’s steep as, but not sure why they’ve deemed it unsafe apart from steep ??AdelaidePeter wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2023 3:23 pmA cyclist, who was critically injured in a solo crash going downhill on Flagstaff Hill Road (in Adelaide's southern suburbs) on March 22, has sadly died. https://www.police.sa.gov.au/sa-police- ... darlington

They announced the collision over the radio while I was driving. Said the forensic crash investigation unit was attending, so I figured it didn't sound good. RIP poor fellow.jasonc wrote: ↑Tue May 09, 2023 5:50 pmhttps://mypolice.qld.gov.au/news/2023/0 ... sh-hendra/
