Tannus Armour Puncture Protection Insert

Postby wm460 » Thu Sep 08, 2022 6:12 pm

Hi I was wondering if any one had tried these Tannus Armour Puncture Protection Inserts?
Are they worth it or just a gimmick?

I haven't used them myself, but I have some friends who've used them in central west NSW where "cat head" thorns are a problem, and they swore by them.

Established / reputable brand.

A nice alternative to their ‘full foam’ tyres whice change the ride feel a lot.

As I rarely have puncture issues, this would not be for me but as uart suggests, if you have cycling and puncture risk that you can’t easily mitigate, I feel it would be worth it. They are also pitched to Downhill riders to help reduce the number of flats.
Cycling is in my BNA

I run vittoria Air Liners on my gravel bike.

It does change the ride quality.

Seems like there's two separate products being offered there - which one are you getting if you buy?
* One seems to operate with tubes, intended to prevent penetration of the tube by thorns etc
* The other seems to operate with tubeless tyres and sealant, intended to stop the tyre casing being compressed against the rim on a square edged hit, and being cut (aka pinch flat or snakebite), commonly used these days on Down Hill or Enduro bikes, and depending on the course, are becoming more common in cross-country and gravel.

Which one you buy will depend on your use case.

I haven't used them but Bicycle Rolling Resistance just did a test on a bunch of tyre inserts. The Tannus one had the best protection, but increased rolling resistance.

Thanks Blizzard, I was curious at just how much impact they'd have on rolling resistance.

Thanks for your replies, I am after the ones you use with tubes, Certain members of the community love smashing glass, going to work in the dark the road just glistens in the headlight, after a rain there is masses of caltrop.

Better or worse?

I thought about getting some but changed my mind after further reading, biggest reason was they dont recommend riding on them once punctured.

Because you have less volume of air with the insert (same with the Tannus), how the tyre compresses under load changes, bit like putting a stronger spring in your suspension.

I ride on sandy terrain with outcrops of limestone. I got the inserts just in case I rip a tyre on sharp limestone and need to get home (the alternative would be carry spare tyre and inner tube). However, the advantages I found is I can run even lower pressure (sub 20psi in 40mm tyres) for better grip and I don't bottom out/burp the tyre if I take a hit

That is what I wanted to point out about using a Tannus, you have a lot less volume of air in the tyre and the bike will ride differently.

For me the Gravel Air Liners have been positive, but it is different from riding without them and you have to play with tyre pressures.
