Giro 2022 !!

Postby MichaelB » Tue May 03, 2022 8:22 am

Finally, the 1st GT of the year, and arguably one of the best although not the biggest, is about to start !!

Here is a brief stage rundown from Inner Ring - https://inrng.com/2022/04/giro-italia-2 ... -profiles/
The unmissable stages
Anything can happen during the Giro but there are some stages that matter more than others, some suggestions for the must-watch days:

Stage 1 because the maglia rosa is there for the taking
Stage 4 with the Etna summit finish and to see if any GC bids come unstuck early
Stage 9 for the Blockhaus summit finish
Stage 14’s circuit race around the Superga makes for a hard race
Stage 16 because of the Mortirolo and Cristina climbs, the tappone
Stage 17 with more climbing and some tricky mountain backroads
Stage 20 for the San Pellegrino, Pordoi and Marmolada trilogy
Stage 21 as the final TT to settle the race
The stage I'll make sure I watch it all, although there are plenty of those is Stage 20 - Not only because I have ridden some of those roads, but we also stayed in Canazei whilst riding in the area, and the race passes through it !!

Stage 20 – Saturday 28 May
Image

The last hurrah in the mountains and a big day. There’s an early climb thrown in before a dash up the valley into the Dolomites and the steady San Pellegrino and Pordoi climbs before the mean Marmolada and its double-digit gradients. Weather permitting.

Oh, and if you want to download the full Road Book, you can do it from here - all 118MB of it !!

Ciao !!

I watched the GCN preview last night. Looks like they have added an Apple TV app which makes their subscription more interesting to me. But I googled for the subscription cost and can't find it... is there a monthly subscription available?

The GCN+ has a $12.99/mth subscription

I'm debating what to do atm, whether make do with SBS or not

I can probably afford $13 for a month. If the viewing experience on the Apple TV app version is better, that could be quite good. It was OK before with casting from the phone, but it sometimes got upset if you tried to move through the video. It worked well for just watching live, but not great at catchup when you tend to skip bits.

I tried to see where the GCN app is on my AppleTV (it’s an old one) but can’t see it and can’t see where to load it.

So if I do go with GCN, I can just mirror it off the iPad or phone

I have a later Apple TV and I was able to load the GCN+ app onto it. I will give it a go.

GCN+ does have geoblocking, but it seems to be on New Zealand that is blocked from the Giro. Should be all good for Australia. This is what is available for just May in Australia:

1 May 2022: Eschborn-Frankfurt (Live & on demand)

04 May 2022: Giro d'Italia Presentation (Live & on demand)

06 May 2022 - 29 May 2022: Giro d'Italia (Live & on demand)

14 May 2022: GP Plumelec-Morbihan (Live & on demand)

15 May 2022: Tro Bro Leon (Live & on demand)

21 May 2022: Tour du Finistère (Live & on demand)

24 May 2022 - 29 May 2022: Tour of Norway (Live & on demand)

26 May 2022: Circuit de Wallonie (Live & on demand)

27 May 2022 - 29 May 2022: Ride London Womens (Live & on demand)

29 May 2022: GP Marcel Kint (Live & on demand)

31 May 2022: Mercantour (Live & on demand)

Out AppleTV is 3rd Gen (checked it (Model A1427) that was released on 2012, so doubt the GCN App is an option.

EDIT : Doh. RTFI.....
How do you download apps on Apple TV 3rd generation?
You can download apps and games from the App Store on your Apple TV.
...
How to download apps for Apple TV
Open the App Store app.
Browse or search for the app that you want to download.
Select the price or Get button. If you see the Open button instead of a price or the Get button, the app is already downloaded.
Meh, I can always mirror it to the TV (has worked before)

Here is a good review of the GC contenders from The Inner Ring

I have the GCN+ working on my Apple TV... but I just went to renew my subscription to GCN the same way as I had done it before.... using the subscriptions page on my iphone. I have the GCN subscription renewed, but then I go into the app and it says no subscription. I got an email from apple which has the username using the same email as my login on the app. Not sure why it does not work. Possible I have somehow gotten multiple logins and I have logged into the wrong one... or maybe there is a delay from getting the subscription to being able to use it?

I spoke to soon, as there is nowhere to access the App Store on my AppleTV (and software is up to date).

Meh, I'll live.

Just watched the 1st stage - damn they rode that climb fast !!

Some of the new team outfits and colours are a bit, um ….

I like the EF kits though - they’ve been coming up with some interesting designs. Alpecins colour choice this time is a bit off , looks dirty !

And to those that crashed, hope they are OK

Just crazy how fast they can climb. Doesn’t even look like a climb the way they stay on the big ring.

Great finish to last nights ITT and great winner.

Next two nights will be good to recover some sleep ready for the Etna stage !

GC fireworks or a stalemate ?

Whilst there is a 'rest day' today, tomorrow starts the 1st of the proper mountain top finishes with the climb to Etna.

Officially, the Etna climb is 22km long at 5.9% , but the climbing starts 40km out (just before the 1st Intermediate sprint)

Wondering whether there will be a GC battle or just some flurries at the end to pinch some time back ?

Whilst there wasn't fireworks, there were a few whose GC chances were dashed !!

MaL stepped off the bike during the early part of Stage 4 due to a hip injury, but also other sources are vague
Nibali slipped off the back of the pack and lost 4:52 on the stage
Tommy D slipped off even earlier and lost 9:10
Guillaume also dropped a bit of time losing 4:08

So, some damage done, but can sometimes never know what will happen !!

Those time gaps are to the stage winner; the GC contenders were at 2:37. Who knows, maybe Nibali can miraculously make up the time in the last week yet again.

Correct.

Nibali has had some big turnarounds for sure, but to drop off the back this early on isn't a good sign.

Apparently Yates stacked it as well and was at the back of the GC group, so hopefully he'll be OK.

By just that much !!

And I thought he had it !

Oh well, at least tonight will be back to an interesting stage to watch - apparently 4,500m of elevation gain throughout the stage.

Image

Probably a day for the breakaway to take a stage win with no GC action, but you never know. Only takes a minor stack or bike issue and it could be hard ....
