Buying eBike for 20km trip with belt drive

Postby anicadin » Sun Jan 30, 2022 7:19 pm

Hello all,

I am changing jobs and the new location will be about 20km each way, so ~40km round trip. The route is mostly bike lanes and PSP, with a total elevation gain of about 230m over the 40km.

I've done the trip once already and it is doable for me at ~20km/h on my cheap Reid bike, but I would like to get an ebike to be a bit less sweaty and hopefully get there a bit quicker.

The ideals for the bike would be:
  • ~$4-5k budget
  • Belt drive
  • Mid-drive motor
  • Supports or comes with rear rack
  • Ideally has fenders
  • Frame option to fit my height of 192cm
I've been having a look and I'm thinking the Lekker Amsterdam GT Enviolo is a good option at ~$4,698 https://www.lekkerbikes.com.au/product/ ... iolo-ebike
However, I can't find many reviews about it, and in Perth there is no official Lekker store, just a couple of dealers which are a bit far.

SMARTMOTION PACER GT 250W 36V at $4,499 is another option https://www.rideelectric.com.au/product ... tric-bike/

There are also some other brands a bit above my ideal price range like Kalkhoff Endeavour 7.B and the Riese & Müller range

Are there any other options, and which would people recommend?

Thanks for your help

The requirement for a belt drive really limits your options at that price point. Between the two listed would they as are quite similar spec with the same Banfang motor, the main choice seems to be do you want a Shimano internally geared hub or the CVT Enviolo hub.

If you drop the requirement for a belt drive and ran derailleur you could probably get a bike with Bosch electrics which is generally regarded as the best motor system, in you price range.

Is avoiding chain oil on work pants the main reason you want the belt drive, or just general ease of maintenance? Because as blizzard said, if you're not dead set against a derailleur, it'd open up a lot more options.

Thanks for the feedback, belt vs derailleur might be something I need to think more about. It was primarily for ease of maintenance and quieter rides, but my issues with the derailleur might be more due to the cheapness of the bike I have at present rather than the system itself.

Most likely, some adjustment is needed, especially if the bike was new/near-new.

Also there are a range of internally geared hub (IGH) options which remove the derailleur and allow for a partially or fully enclosed chain.

There's plenty of options on chain maintenance being discussed. For my commuter I'm a three-chains-and-wax person.

Agreed that there's not many belt drive options that fit your requirements, you've covered both brands I've looked at. The Lekker Outback is on sale at the moment & ticks the boxes too.

I've just finished ebike shopping with my wife, we looked at a lot of options & ended up with a (Giant) Momentum Transend E+ - mid-drive 60Nm Yamaha, 500Wh battery & 7 speed Shimano Nexus IHG. It's still a chain, but the rear hub gears make it a lot cleaner/simpler.

Unfortunately it comes without rack or fenders, but they're being fitted now & should be ready next week.
