Hi,

I am interested in buying/ importing a mamchari bike to Melbourne. Any thoughts how to buy or import one if it is possible?

For those like me not familiar with the term, Mamachari is a Japanese slang term literally meaning “mom's bike”, essentially the same as the dutch Omafiet or granny bike.

New or second-hand?

The second hand market in Japan is weird as they tend to be sold to and by agents in bulk lots to make up full container loads for shipping to South America, VietNam, Laos and Cambodia

Sure, anything's possible. Sourcing and getting it here through an agent or store might take some doing. Online sales out of Japan are usually pretty good for stock or smaller items, never tried to get a bike out. Bear in mind if it's over $1000 you'll have to pay import duty (if it's new, maybe not if it's used?)

I realise this is not exactly answering your question, but there might be something of that style available locally for less than what importing would cost you if you can narrow things down. mamachari is a reasonably broad spectrum.
