I've got an Avanti blade which I've upgraded to an Alivio 9 speed group-set.
The bike is 2-3 kph slower than my road bike but I enjoy riding it as it's more comfortable.
Getting to my question, the bike has the stock Weinmann apt2-18 rims which seem to be heavy as they have 36 spokes on each wheel.
I was thinking of changing the wheels. Would I be wasting money buying a cheap set of Shimano RS100's or Fulcrum racing 6's for the bike to try and make it a little faster?

What is you other bike? Just curious as to what you are comparing this bike to.

Yeah definitely, if you have been thinking about it, then just do it !
I would go for the fulcrums as they look quite flash.
If you don’t get the wheel upgrade then experiment with swapping the wheels with the Merida.
That will even out the performance difference of the 2 bikes, as I am assuming that the Merida has lighter, 32 spoke wheels.

I ended up buying the Shimano RS100's as I was able to pick them up today.
I went for a ride and they look and feel great.
Nice upgrade for $249.
