Hi all,
The motor in my Shimano Steps E6000 bike has broken down, it has stripped a plastic spur gear cog driven by the motor's pinion.
Shimano said they don't sell spare parts and wants $1500 for a new motor. Considering the bike only cost $2500 and the only thing wrong with the motor is a single stripped gear I find that simply absurd.
Does anyone know of any bike shop in Australia (or internationally for that matter) that sells spares (new or used) for the Shimano Steps motor (DU-E6001)?
Thanks in advance.

Hiya,
Think that you will be struggling to get serviceable parts for something like that. It's not just Shimano, but many suppliers do not do spares down to that level. It's incredibly expensive and time consuming (as well as spares storage and tracking etc) to do so.
Your best bet is to contact Shimano Australia direct to see if they can assist, or another option may be to look for a s/hand bike/motor and try that option.

Thanks MichaelB for your reply. I ended up ordering another motor on Ebay for a bit less than $1500.
I guess that's the price we pay for going with highly proprietary setups.

Glad you got it sorted.
It's not always to do with proprietary nature of some items, it's more about how much it costs to make it fully user serviceable - the complexity can be enormous. Sometimes it's just easier for a company to sell down to a certain level, and that is often also tied with how/who they receive their parts from.
as an example, Shimano probably buy in/get supplied the motor as a unit, they don't build it up, hence they don't sell the parts. Suck, but that's sometimes called progress ....

A plastic/nylon pinion gear is just about a consumable part on an ebike though. Certainly the most common part to fail, and the more popular ebike kits do usually have them available as spares.

You are not the first
One of the reasons for using a nylon gear is that it's a sacrificial part that should be easy to replace - I'm surprised there isn't at least an aftermarket part available - perhaps the commenter "Steve" is correct when he says "The bearing in the middle of the black plastic cog is a one way clutch bearing (NSK FCB-12)"

Don’t disagree, but the choice rests with the suppliers, hence the burgeoning market for those 2nd tier suppliers that can help.uart wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 3:42 pmA plastic/nylon pinion gear is just about a consumable part on an ebike though. The Shimano Australia approach was to receive the complete motor and service then return to the dealer.
It is also about a dealer doing a few bits (stick in the cables) and keep the user / rider from making mistakes.
Unusual that it was not an option to repair… but when you call as a consumer, you are not a bike shop and don’t get bike shop support.

"Steve" is actually me Thought that was one of the better places to share my findings. Yeah I agree that it was designed as a sacrificial gear as every other gear in the drive train is metal.find_bruce wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 6:20 pmOne of the reasons for using a nylon gear is that it's a sacrificial part that should be easy to replace - I'm surprised there isn't at least an aftermarket part available - perhaps the commenter "Steve" is correct when he says "The bearing in the middle of the black plastic cog is a one way clutch bearing (NSK FCB-12)"

So... does that mean there might be an authorised Shimano dealer that I can take the broken motor into and they can send it off to Shimano for a "service/repair" rather than replacing the whole motor unit?

Most bike shops are authorised dealers and it is a question of whether they will deal with it. Some don’t do e-bike stuff.
Give some shops, inparticular friendly ebike shops a call. If you have removed the motor but not dismanteled then it should be fine. Try and work out costs in advance or confirm that you need to approve before exceeding certain cost limits. I can’t comment on the the time or costs however.
