Hey cyclists,

I’m wanting to get into riding to get fit but I’m not sure what bike I should buy. My budget it $1000 and I would prefer it to be under the $1000 mark if possible. I’m looking for a light trail bike preferably, and something that has a less hunched over riding position as I have some back issues. Any help would be fantastic! Thank you.

Just to get you started, my suggestion would be to get an inexpensive second hand bike. Not knowing where you are makes it hard to recommend somewhere to go. In Mebourne (once the Sydney removalist lockdown ends) you could try CERES. You should find something under $200.
Look for a well known bike brand and a style/ size that feels ok. Don't get too hung up on styles (road, Mtb, gravel) at this stage, Take it to a reputable bike shop near you and spend another couple of hundred getting it sorted.
Ride it for 6 months and see how it goes. You should then have a reasonable idea of what you need, and can talk to the bike shop about options to upgrade.

What Mozzie said.
For light trail riding (in fact, for general riding), a standard bike (no suspension or other silliness) with tyres at least 32mm wide will do quite nicely. Given your back issues, look for something with your hands above level seat - these can be retrofitted to generic "flat bar" bikes but it'll add to the price.
As Mozzie said, a decent shop can sort that out. And making sure it fits you

The big issue right now is that bikes and bike parts are in short supply, globally.

Yep. All that Thoglette says is excellent advice. Suspension is heavy and one more thing to maintain, but bigger tyres have a similar effect and add traction as well.

When I hear ‘light trail’ I think mountain bike. Do you mean trail like bush trail or bike path.
