Going to start off with a full disclaimer.. I have absolutely no clue.

I just purchased a Merida reacto 4000 and looking at sometime in the near future upgrading to electronic shifting..

Di2 or etap?

I’ve been looking at groupsets and I’m very confused.. could anyone offer any advice on where to look and what to look at? Do I need to purchase a whole groupset or just the parts as most groupsets come with chainrings and cassettes or do I need those to be compatible with the upgrade? Like I said.. I’ve got no clue!

If going the SRAM route you will be up for a complete groupset, plus a new freewheel body for your rear hub to fit the different cassette design, regardless of what's currently on the bike, as there is no mechanical 12-sp. counterpart to share components with.

Di2 can be bought as an upgrade kit of just the electro bits - shifters, derailleurs, battery & wiring parts. Hydro brake versions include the hoses & calipers, but mechanical brake versions exclude the calipers. So it's less of an outlay because the non-Di2 components carry over.

If it's already got Shimano, it'll be slightly easier to go Di2 as above.

You just need the parts listed above. They can be purchased as a kit or individually.
