I cannot believe how well my >20 year old Shimano shoes have lasted, but there comes a time.........

My question is: for a basic pair of spd cleat shoes for general riding on my hybrid, are Shimano's still that robust? Mind you, at my age it would be a miracle if I were still cycling should next pair last 20 years. But I sill like to buy stuff that lasts.

I can't complain about my el cheapo Shimano shoes. 2 pairs in 11 years. Both still going strong. The first pair retired from outdoor use for the trainer the other took over for road use. Cleats get chewed up on my gravel driveway but still last a year or two. 91,000 km's between the two. Very good value.
I'd buy Shimano again.

Mine came already well run-in from a mate for $20 in 2001. They've probably done somewhere over 70,000 km including Audax, commuting, touring, fitness rides, you name it. Never done a thing to look after them. Unbelievable quality.

I can totally agree, that Shimano can produce top-notch high quality footwear. As well as other bicycle related stuff. I don't know how, but my wife love to wear allbirds shoes for nurses while she rides on bicycle. And she is completely okay with that, she doesn't even want to wear anything else among footwear, just to compare. I don't get it, I don't like them as much as she does.

SPD (MTB) shoes as I am a recreational rider and weight will not be a penalty.

I was recommended either Shimano M520 or M8100 pedals and need a recommendation for mtb shoes for road use.

Shimano’s SPD shoes used to have a fairly relaxed fit. In recent years, they’ve become narrower and made the toe box squishy. Go to a store if you can to try some on.
