Hervey Bay / Fraser Coast Gran fondo

Postby stevenaaus » Fri May 14, 2021 7:31 pm

I'm off next weekend :) But i'm not sure the organizers have much of a clue. I'd already seen these unrealisticly fast speed waves
130km Gran fondo
Wave 1 –40 km per hour + averageo
Wave 2 –30 to 39 km per hour averageo
Wave 3 –30 to 39 km per hour averageo
Wave 4 –Less than 30km per hour averageo
Wave 5 –Less than 30km per hour average
87km Medio
Wave 6 –40 km per hour + averageo
Wave 7 –30 to 39 km per hour averageo
Wave 8 –30 to 39 km per hour averageo
Wave 9 –Less than 30km per hour average
But buried deep in the tourism pamphlett/rules is somethings new
Stay single file at all times unless overtaking another rider, riding two abreast is not allowed. Event marshals and QLD Police will be on course regulating this

Always keep a safe distance (at least 200m) between yourself and the back of a vehicle.

Signal at roundabouts with one arm.

It was already looking unlikely I could make it due to family commitments, but with that nonsense not a chance.

Aside from being counter-productive (a line of cyclists two abreast is half as long, therefore easier for motorists to pass safely) I can't see how that is legal. The event is taking place on open roads, and riding two abreast is legal, end of story.

No doubt everyone will line up in wave 1 as per usual.

Well that's a crock of chit for a start! What happens when there are 20 riders passing another 20 riders?

Lol.. someone who drives everywhere at the tourism board thinks it's a good idea to have a bike event for the region.

Fairly well run event :) especially since it's the inaugural. Huge effort and volunteers, and good MC / interviews for the winners of the timed "not a race".

Not a huge turn-out. Two or three hundred i think ? Only 3 riders lined up for the 130km +40kph speed... but there was quite a bit of racing all day. Rain too, and some of the local drivers kindof didn't give any courtesies, but traffic control was pretty well done that i saw.

Lovely venue in the bay-side park. Hopefully will get better turn up next year.

What the hell is wrong with putting on an event like this, just because it's some "trendy" holiday area? :? Noosa Tri is four times as big and a better "tourist" area!

Good on yer for being part of it...
Maryborough region has a long connection with cycling sport and not that long ago bike riding was a popular means of transport there. (Not many hills, etc)
Past champions and one current international rider are from this region.
Some friends of mine were thinking about giving it a go, but in the end were deterred by the prospect of a long drive home (to the Gold Coast) in the inevitable heavy Sunday arvo traffic.
Hope it happens again...
