A while ago, came across an ad on Faceberk for a frame that might suit a mate's desire to enable him to have a decent roadie (current rides are Focus Izalco with Red 22 and Domane for the Gravel stuff) but also not fear the better gravel paths in and around his hoem area of Clare inSA.

The ad was for as NIB 2020 Cannondale Synapse (noice green colour) - F&F + TA's & seatpost (25.4mm) for a bargain ($1,100 shipped)

And then with the release of the new Cervelo Caledonia in the Maroon/Red colour, it got me thinking about the next roadie that I'd buy when mine finally dies.

The sort of things that I'd be after are ;
- Minimal propriety gear that limits sources
- ability to run 28-30mm tyres with mudguards or 32mm without (getting older, so the comfort from the bigger tyres are nice )
- sweet colours like the Bowman Palace Orange Sherbert or the bright/matt colours like some of the Canyon's
- Threaded BB
- Disc brakes
- Affordable

As an OTS bike, the Caledonia ticks some of those boxes, but then the BBRight and the integrated cabling bars, whilst sweet mean tuning/tweaking to get the right stack & reach is expensive, so what would be your "new bike" that you would actually buy, and not just dream about. The Synapse is also a good option, and still thinking about it .....

The other option is a custom frame, and I'm getting close to being able to afford the Llewellyn that I drool over - a lugged Crescendo or Fillet Brazed Collosus.

What's your next ride ?

I had a similar criteria. 32c relaxed geo road bike, hydro disc, decent wheelset. The kicker was the threaded. Turns out for the same price of what I would have paid, I managed to get a Ti custom from the folks at Waltly for under $4k for medium spec build - ultegra, DT wheels and splurged a bit on bars, stem, post and saddle. Could easily be done with a modest build at $3500. Hardest part was sourcing the right forks with correct offset and a2c etc. Weighs in at 9.5kg with pedals, could easily be 8.5 if i reduced the tube thickness to road spec and made more sensible choices like not putting 200g of bar gels etc.

Much the same..

- standard dimensions for headsets, through-axles etc
- 30mm tyre clearance
- a good quality steel tube set
- BSA threaded BB
- Disc brakes, flat mount
- no internal cabling required

The Kona Roadhouse would have been ideal, Reynolds 853, flat mount etc, but I left it too long and now they're all gone.



So at some stage, when I feel the need, I'll probably get Gordon Hill to put something together, unless I do something stupid and buy one of those Raleigh Ti re-issues.

I looked at a Ti from China for my MonsterCross option, but ended up with the GT Xizang instead. Exchange rate is a bit better now, so that can still be an option.

The def'n of 'affordable' will vary, but for me, the Llewellyn would be at the top of the range.

What makes it hard is there are sooooooooooo many options

Bastion Frame is nigh on A$9k. Very nice but not affordable.

The Cresendo is probably a few $k cheaper, but afraid to ask

I'm a massive fan of the Exploro Racemax. The right set-up and that would look mean.

The Caledonia caught my eye the other day too, I really like it but I have a BMC Roadmachine already that fills the same niche

Never had the money for a full dura ace
set up. Have run 66,67 and 6800 ultegra though.
5800 and 7000 105 is really good in the stuff I've tried.
Prob the way I'm going too from now on.

Road only, not this road/gravel/cross/tour/hybrid/commute/doitall nonsense...as per the title...

Carbon, non-integrated seat post, 28 tyre capable, rim brakes preferred (but not the direct mount or under-stay guff) but discs OK as long as they don't squeal, DGAF on axles really, threaded BB, braze FD tab, tapered steerer. Avoid most planned obsolesence or can overcome fitment issues.

I've got the doitall anyway.

Just do it. I'm probably about to run 4700 on a SLX frame. Works as good as DA7800 and you get hidden cable routing. It's just a shame it doesn't come in silver.

28mm (or maybe even 30mm) Schwable Pro Ones are my current favourite, would really like skin walls
could even spec the finishing kit Zipp SL70 alloy bars and stem, Zipp CX bar tape, Canyon S13 seatpost, Selle Italia SLR

Bad news on the Raleigh front I'm afraid 10speed.
I emailed an inquiry to the UK. Raleigh won't ship to Aus. Only available to the UK and Ireland.
You could possibly make a drop-shipping arrangement, I don't know.

My Dad used to ride a lower level (I think) Raleigh painted in the same colour scheme though I'm fairly certain it was only Raleigh branded, not TI Raleigh. I was only a kid at the time so probably 45 or so years ago and I don't recall the details, just the paintwork.

Oh well. You'll just have to support the poor old Aussie battler, and end up with a better bike.

Yeah I thought that would be the case.
When I'm ready (and sell off a couple of lesser bikes) I'll get GH to build something up for me in Ford Jewel Green metallic or maybe Ford Tropicana Green. .

What about a Lynskey or Litespeed - stock, semi-custom or custom frames. Titanium frames that are typically built to stand the test of time so when all the gear is old, you upgrade.

If the geometry on offer is a match for your body then you save a bit over a full-custom frame.

Look through the forum for the various stories. Usually the customer comes out on top but if you deal with a local shop / agent then if there are issues, that is typically where it stalls.

It is a really nice paint job !! And damn it, I have a nice set of carbon bars, some sweet and deep carbon wheels, a beautiful and light saddle already in the shed and waiting .....

Looking at the frame sizing, I'm sorta between the 56 & 58 size, but would have to check the Sttack & Reach to properly evaluate )

I tested, albeit briefly, a Factor O2 frame a while ago, and I LOVED that. Dunno what the tyre clearance is tho.

Yep, they are also valid options, but haven't seen many of the road oriented versions having bigger tyre clearance yet.

You know most of the boutique Ti brands order from chinese waltly or equivalent right? The pretty sure the bossi is, I know curve do. Might as well just go straight to the chinese manufacturer and built it the way you like. Got mine done for $A1500 landed. The Bossi looks like a standard frame out of their catalog - even the forks look like the ones they had in stock.

I was going to say you will have to, Bowman had sold out all there Orange Sherbet Palace R 3 and only had Midnight Black available for shipping in October. A few days later all now you can have any colour of Palace R 3 (as long as it is Orange Sherbet or Midnight Black) as long as you can wait until November for delivery. Unsure if the delivery is from UK or Tawain where they are made.

I like the Cervelo S5 disc, but I’d probably stay with Canyon because my current bike has been so good.

I do like Heroïn HR but they are too expensive. Still, a French bike has appeal.

My next bike will have disc brakes probably.
