What I will say though is that riding with headphones on is not a good idea. In some countries it is not allowed and will get you a rather nasty fine (eg, France for instance).

In some countries you'll get a rather nasty fine for riding without a helmet.

That fine also goes for motor vehicle drivers too IIRC. 135€ from memory.

A cyclist has died after he and a car collided at Kingsford, north of Gawler.

Emergency services rushed to Sturt Highway, near Argent Rd, where a Kia sedan and the cyclist crashed about 7am this morning.

Both were travelling northeast on the 110km/h highway.

The rider – a 47-year-old Hallett Cove man – died at the scene.

The Kia driver – a 26-year-old Greenwith man – was not injured but was taken by ambulance to the Lyell McEwin Hospital as a precaution.

That section is dual carriageway with 2 lanes in each direction...

Really tragic incident. It's even more striking that Australian road authorities are seemingly so inattentive despite so much of the entirely preventable traffic accidents. Many road authorities in Australia have started "towards zero" initiatives/campaigns (https://towardszero.nsw.gov.au/safesystem) with great promises (Safe roads, safe speeds, safe vehicles & safe people)
that are similar to Dutch & Swedish "Sustainable Safety", however none of these promises have been systematically implemented.

• 1 lane per direction
• narrow lanes to prevents high speeds
• directional separation

This is a dreadful incident. they were riding at before 5am, and still this happens.

We all know people who ride along there, I think I’ve done so as well in years past. the photo of the car damage makes it look like a high speed accident.

It’s dreadful. Truth is none of these country roads feel safe to ride on IMO because of this risk. Compared to where I ride overseas, that feels much safer.

Punishment needs to be increased heavily. Drivers are responsible for controlling their vehicle! There's always going to be an excuse but at the end of the day they drove into a cyclist from behind and a human being is dead.
Distracted, drug effected, tired, speeding... Why does it matter? They just struck and killed someone. Why does the law take such a lax view.
Nothing will change instill the law does!!!!

Yes it's terrible news. I've ridden there many times. The SMH report says Old Kurrajong Rd (which is quiet) but the photo appears to be on the busy Kurrajong Rd?

I'm devastated. I just had a call from a friend, and the riders are both my club mates and the rider who was killed I have done some epic rides with I'm told the driver fell asleep. It looks like a head on. The riders were heading up to Kurrajong. I need to go lie down.

Update: I just had another call, and the 2nd rider has also died in hospital

That’s dreadful, really, really sorry. I’m guessing we probably knew them too as your club people often come along to my races.

The judge's job is to give a sentence appropriate to the crime. It is the job of the Immigration department to decide whether the crime is worthy of deportation. The judge has stepped outside of his area and decided to pre-empt the Immigration decision - very disappointing.
