I'd keep the power meter (two sided). It can help with checking the smoothness and symmetry of the pedal strokes. When it comes back to road I'm going to take my time and build something custom, fully fitted and ridiculously cool. No more Strava starred segments, no more power meters

I second this - going forward you might just tackle longer uphill segments where the speeds are lower.am50em wrote: ↑Wed Aug 21, 2024 8:44 amI'd keep the power meter (two sided). It's early days, you are just out of hospital so just take time. A coach with racing experience at a high level would be very helpful.
They inevitably have tumbles in racing, sometimes nasty ones and they get get back to what they are doing.

It's an omen, don't ride on the same day that you buy it.
So how's things feeling now and what's the long term outlook for the healing?

Pain slowly improving with rolling over in bed the hardest. Hope to get back on the indoor trainer in two weeks very gently and then outdoors after 6 pending physio approval.
All the fractures are minimally displaced and should heal fully. There’s an orthopaedic follow-up at six weeks for the scapula which seems a bit pointless so I may go privately for that.
When I’m comfortable back on the gravel bike I’ll do a full bike fit and start planning another road bike. It’ll be interesting to see how that turns out.

ouch. hope you heal wellMr Purple wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2024 8:07 amI’ll level with you guys now I can remember more. I was going for a KOM, a nice gentle 5% backstreet climb on a ride I’d already taken three others on, and for #652.
Except this time something on the bike broke -720W and I suspect the seat stay. This on an older but only 18 month assembled pro level Izalco Max frameset.
On the ground before I knew it. I don’t even care about the KOMs but enjoy doing them, but it’s not just worth the risk if these are the consequences. It does annoy me that I really was doing nothing wrong, but that power into a sprint has a lot of energy potential and this is what can happen.
652 is enough!

Eeeek1! Instantly put me off my lush mid-afternoon vanilla slice.
Never mind.
Isn't localised radiotherapy an option if there are residual cancer cells? I had this as a preference over any further surgery (which would have been disfiguring).

I don't know, it wasn't mentioned.
You never really know if the margins are wide enough and that is the problem with cancer cells because they can branch out further in one direction, that's why it's such an evil thing.

It's healing much faster than the first op 3yrs ago. It's a shame that they didn't get all of the cells and I now need another one in the near future.

Annoyingly an unexpected consequence of breaking my scapula on the left side seems to be a TMJ dysfunction on the right side, and the process of chasing that also revealed a tooth needing a root canal on the right (hopefully salvageable, and not needing an implant).
Just for once I'd like to have something go wrong that isn't painful and expensive!

Hope you’re holding up ok - regular exercise is important for our mental healthMr Purple wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2024 12:49 pmRecovering well from all the fractures and up to week four on Saturday, though missing riding outside.

At least root canal is routine - last thing you want is a surgeon scratching her head & going “that’s odd”

They've been doing that for some years. I cracked two molars within the space of two years - just literally split straight up the middle despite having immaculate dental hygeine and no previous tooth issues.find_bruce wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2024 1:36 pmAt least root canal is routine - last thing you want is a surgeon scratching her head & going “that’s odd”
After blaming grinding they've narrowed it down to the biomechanical forces and the shapes of the cusps. The only good news is I'm sort of out of teeth in that position (or have titanium ones now) so it should be over after this one.
This one also has gone from a 'very tiny bit of decay they were monitoring' to 'big hole in the side of the tooth' between checkups. My dentist has a theory it's dehydration related from cycling given I only very rarely have gels.

He may have a point looking at the research. Get your teeth checked, people!

I have been in worse places, but also better as far as mental health goes. My main ongoing problem is that I have soft tissue degeneration and resultant arthritis developing in several knuckles in my right hand, and that's not a great thing when you're right-handed and work in very hands-on environments. It's frustrating to know that while I have the skills to do the tasks at work, at times I do not have the physical ability to handle the necessary tools with adequate precision to do the job efficiently because my knuckles just won't handle it. Today was one of those days.

Missed this yesterday. Another day closer to retiring.
Struggling to let go, but still looking forward to a new life.
