Likewise you could ask the same question about your about assumptions about ABS and ESC.

Neither of these 'improvements' to cars address the main cause of accidents. At best they play around the tiny edges.

The problem with many "safety improvements" is that they don't improve the major problem, which is the nut behind the steering wheel/handlebars/skateboard/etc

No worries - that's the line car manufacturers have been selling & now they will trot out the same lines about auto emergency braking. Like you I am not buying that will be the result.

Whenever someone tells you that you should make eye contact with the driver. Nope, it's the drivers job to look out for pedestrians, and the Transport department to make safe crosswalks and footpaths

Never mind that.. the leading cause of deaths amongst 1-14 in Aus is in their parents cars!

From a BUG meeting regarding Stacey st widening and putting a shared path there at Bankstwon. We Requested the shared path has some shade and buffer against traffic in the form of some plants (either tree or bushes), because it is unpleasant riding beside a motorway with no shade and immediately drummed by the noise and pollution.

The reply was something on the line of no because emergencies and it is dangerous, but the Transport dept can make the green strip near the houses.

we all had a reaction of, " trees near the road are dangerous, so they must be moved further back, so cars can easily crush peds n cycs on the shared path." there should be some buffer there, if for cars are dangerous, what about the peds and cyclists who are immediately hit without any barrier?

They also cite the speeds around 60 kmh (in a "street" near Bankstown CBD), certainly around CBDs you need to slow down and go 30 kmh.

There were 25 people cited for that in a 1.5hrs police sting. Nice wide roads, nothing obscuring the crosswalk signs in case you don't realise the change in pavement. Bad. Very bad.

Te cops used a measurement to walk out on cue. When a car was app. 40 metres away, assuming they obey the limit (app. 50Km/h) there was apparently room to stop safely according to their NHSTA. Do we use a similar speed/measurement here?

so, what's next? footpath should have rails, peds wear hi viz armour and have a helmet?

Not the speed that reflects the risks an MV at that speed presents to, you know, the people using the urban space (as opposed to passing through in a car).

Pretty much the only way to change purchase behaviour is to introduce behavioural tax. If the Govt wants to reduce petrol consumption then tax it more. The tax gain could be used to offset the cost of low energy alternatives such as providing better public transport, adding cycle paths etc etc. Hang on, I'm preaching to the converted
