Why would you think ABS magically would fix that?

Ditto.
find_bruce wrote:I readily accept they are all possibilities, but is there anything more concrete than anecdata on these explanations?
Likewise you could ask the same question about your about assumptions about ABS and ESC.
Neither of these 'improvements' to cars address the main cause of accidents. At best they play around the tiny edges.

No assumptions from me human- hence my sceptical comments about wanting actual data
By far the biggest improvement in “road toll” was decreasing the number needed of drunk drivers

There seemed to be an implicit assumption in your statement that ABS and stability control would reduce cars running off the road. At least that was my apparently false interpretation.

Yeh sometimes our comments can be understood differently to the intention
The problem with many "safety improvements" is that they don't improve the major problem, which is the nut behind the steering wheel/handlebars/skateboard/etc

No worries - that's the line car manufacturers have been selling & now they will trot out the same lines about auto emergency braking. Like you I am not buying that will be the result.

Whenever someone tells you that you should make eye contact with the driver. Nope, it's the drivers job to look out for pedestrians, and the Transport department to make safe crosswalks and footpaths
-----------------------------
CAR company studying ped interactions w driverless cars discovered a curious fact: "over 90% of people cannot determine gaze of driver at 15m or see driver at all at 30m", the typical distance needed for a car traveling only 25 mph approaching x-walk

What Is The Number One Killer Of People Ages 5 to 29?
Road traffic injuries
https://www.forbes.com/sites/brucelee/2 ... 5cb784363f
It is the leading cause of death among children and young adults around the world. It is the ninth leading cause of death overall globally. It resulted in about 1.35 million people dying in 2016 alone. It will probably become the seventh leading killer worldwide by 2030.
"Every day, 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This is one death every 50 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $44 billion."

From a BUG meeting regarding Stacey st widening and putting a shared path there at Bankstwon. We Requested the shared path has some shade and buffer against traffic in the form of some plants (either tree or bushes), because it is unpleasant riding beside a motorway with no shade and immediately drummed by the noise and pollution.
The reply was something on the line of no because emergencies and it is dangerous, but the Transport dept can make the green strip near the houses.
we all had a reaction of, " trees near the road are dangerous, so they must be moved further back, so cars can easily crush peds n cycs on the shared path." there should be some buffer there, if for cars are dangerous, what about the peds and cyclists who are immediately hit without any barrier?
They also cite the speeds around 60 kmh (in a "street" near Bankstown CBD), certainly around CBDs you need to slow down and go 30 kmh.

If you're in a crosswalk with Hi viz and drivers still don't slow down, It's not you who is in the wrong, its the drivers

There were 25 people cited for that in a 1.5hrs police sting. Nice wide roads, nothing obscuring the crosswalk signs in case you don't realise the change in pavement. Bad. Very bad.
Te cops used a measurement to walk out on cue. When a car was app. 40 metres away, assuming they obey the limit (app. 50Km/h) there was apparently room to stop safely according to their NHSTA. Do we use a similar speed/measurement here?

so, what's next? footpath should have rails, peds wear hi viz armour and have a helmet?
all to worship the car
It's only 12%, most often ut's the driver at fault, if not probably the traffic engineer who designed the road/street

Seniors are being encouraged to wear high visibility vests when they're out walking. It's hoped the move will reduce the number of elderly pedestrians killed on our roads, but critics doubt it will have an impact, because drivers are often at fault. @MelinaSarris7

Don't forget the nameless bureaucrat who decided to set the speed limit at 80% of the design speed of road/street.
Not the speed that reflects the risks an MV at that speed presents to, you know, the people using the urban space (as opposed to passing through in a car).
Don't forget the nameless bureaucrat who decided it was more important to run Operation Pedro than to address MV misbehaviour

Congestion tax on CBD's? There's only about 6 roads into Sydney CBD so that its not that hard to put up the equipment that uses the motorway tags. Melbourne has more roads but still way doable

Pretty much the only way to change purchase behaviour is to introduce behavioural tax. If the Govt wants to reduce petrol consumption then tax it more. The tax gain could be used to offset the cost of low energy alternatives such as providing better public transport, adding cycle paths etc etc. Hang on, I'm preaching to the converted
