My commute is 25 to 30km each way and I wear whatever cycling kit is appropriate for the season.

First up congrats on quitting the fags. I did exactly the same.
My ride is from Ashfield to the CBD so I do Liliyfield Hill. It does get easier and is now a bit of an effort section for me. I pick a car at the bottom and stand on the pedals until I get to it. The distance is increasing gradually. Still hurts like bu**ery though.
Regarding clothing, I wear bib shorts and a jersey as a starter and then layer up as the weather dictates. First on is the gilet for the cooler mornings in summer (not many admittedly) followed by arm/leg warmers and finally long finger gloves. I looked into a shell top for rain too but figure for a 10km/30min ride, I'd just get wet instead. My back pack does have a rain cover which is really handy.
I am no Adonis in lycra but I can say I have lost quite a bit of weight riding and don't really care what others think anyway.
