Yep, by tonight he''l be more than a state in front of FKT.

I don't bother comparing Lachy's speed & endurance with my own - it'd be like asking why a VW beetle can't win Le Mans :D

ldrcycles' prediction of him finishing on Friday is s looking good. Should be riding near my work sometime on Thursday so I will try & get out to cheer him on

So Lachlan took a KOM for a 77km segment yesterday, by over 23 minutes

strava said the wind yesterday was WNW. average speed was 36.6 for 13 hours moving time
Worth noting too, that the distant second was set by Ben Swift, two time British National Road Race Champion

One of his support crew posted a video the other day (shared on the Record Association facebook page) showing a typical breakfast being prepared in the motorhome kitchen. Part 1 was an omolette wrap, and part 2 was crumpets with jam and cream. I'm pretty sure jam and cream crumpets won't have the same effect on me

Bordertown in SA today would be around 510km, the next stop on the highway is Kaniva in Victoria at 550ish. Whichever he goes for Melbourne tomorrow is a certainty. He'd then be looking at Wagga Wagga as a minimum on Wednesday, Sydney Thursday, and Port Macquarie Friday.

I hope they find the truck driver and absolutely nail the guy.

Absolutely disgusting.

I doubt any serious penalty will result if they bother to make any attempt to track him down.
It would appear the behaviour of that truck driver meets societal standards in Australia. :x

From the official site:
Day 26 | Port Germein, SA > Coonalpyn, SA | KM 12122

Lachy´s hardest day so far

Just when we thought it was going to be smooth tarmac and tailwinds all the way back to Port Macquarie, Lachy had his hardest day yet. Three near misses in traffic on the highway out of Adelaide just about cracked him.

The day had started so well. With a cool breeze at his back, Lachy rolled through farm country on quiet gravel roads, enjoying the sound of the birds and sight of the mist rising over the fields. Dot watchers joined him as he got closer to the South Australian capital and by the time he rode into the city, they were a whole peloton.

Lachy pushed on, straight into a buzz of trucks and cars. After the third time he almost got hit, he decided he was going to have to reroute. A backroad on the map looked like it would take him where he needed to go.

That 4x4 track soon turned to deep sand and then Lachlan was riding straight into the bush in search of harder ground. He was still hiking his bike when the sun set.

After a couple of hours out in the woods, he decided he was going to have to cut the day short and stop at the next motel.

One big hug from his wife Rachel and a cold beer later, and Lachy was able to laugh off the toughest day on his ride around Australia so far.
Bloody hell. That's terrible.

Lachy will be coming through Melbourne today, the planned route isn’t far from my house so I’m going to try to be on Sydney Rd when he goes past. Meanwhile FKT has started their journey across the Nullarbor

Edit: looks like he’s giving Melbourne a miss, bummer

With the level of physical and mental fatigue he'd be at after 12,000km, it's no wonder having 4 homicidal drivers in quick succession has had such an effect. As p!nzo mentioned he bypassed Melbourne completely, going up through Gisborne and Kilmore. Latest word from the support crew is Saturday looks most likely for the finish.

I've lined up tomorrow off work in case, being 700km away I can't respond all that quickly to schedule changes  I'll have to be up early tomorrow morning to check the dot, if he's away and making strong progress that's the sign for me to head south.

The was his route yesterday from Ballarat to Wangaratta. Seems he's already turned off - the planned route had him going Wagga to Goulburn via Coota, Boorawa and Crookwell. Instead he's gone down the Sturt Highway & turned onto the Hume. Despite the volume of traffic, the Hume has much better shoulders than the Olympic Highway.

Will watch & see whether he's going to stay on the Hume or go the much tougher route of Tumut & or Wee Jasper. Either way I expect he's going to stop at somewhere between Goulburn and Moss Vale. Either way that will be more than 600km to Port Macquarie, so a long day in the saddle or a brief stop to finish early Saturday

Anybody willing to have a guess what his final time will be?

I'm going to go with 30 days 9 hours 30 minutes.

Lachlan's team (EF Pro Cycling) just announced an event tomorrow morning to welcome him into Sydney at Taylor Square, "sometime between 8 and 11am". They say they'll give a more precise time tonight.

If he goes with his original route that timing in the middle of Sydney would probably see him finishing Friday at Dungog, meaning a mid morning-lunchtime arrival in Port Macquarie Saturday.

He's got here quicker than I expected - so no leave pass for tomorrow. I would have liked to have been there.

Interesting - if he does keep to the route on the map he will be cycling right past my place sometime Friday Arvo heading for Dungog if ldrcycles estimate is correct. I suppose we will just have to follow the dot and rush out when it gets near :)

Thanks, Taylor Square is only 10 minutes from my work so I'll do my best to be there - got to be some advantage to working for myself

Yeah there is that

Someone asked if he was going to push on to Part Macquarie tonight - only another 390km to make a 640 km day, but Lachy dismissed that fairly quickly. I suspect he'll stop somewhere around Bulladelah tonight & finish early on Saturday morning
