Cyclist hit by motorist on the GDE
Postby Ross » Tue Aug 14, 2012 8:26 am
Cyclist hit by motorist on the GDE southbound near Belconnen Way off ramp. Just heard a report on the radio, don't know any other details, hope it's not anybody from here. Even though there is a large bike lane on GDE it feels dangerous to me and I won't ride on there, except <6am.

I ride there all the time, I *almost* went that way this morning. The bike lane is good, but bicycles wanting to continue on the GDE have to get across the exit lane, and it can be pretty hairy as there is a fairly continuous stream of traffic heading down it.
I ride, therefore I am. But don't ride into harm's way.

Assuming it is the same incident - what are the chances of two in one day - unfortunately the cyclist has died Cyclist dies on Gungahlin Drive
Odd though that the paper reports him as "falling off his bicycle" but the radio says hit by a car.

medical condition? you wonder if he just kind of wobbled and fell. The CT story doesn't indicate another car involved.
Either way - condolences to this gentleman's family and friends. Thanks to those who obviously stopped to help and/or rang an ambulance.

There was heavy fog down south this morning. Not sure about north side? Could have possible played a role.

The fog tends to form up around dawn, was probably clear-ish.HAKS wrote:There was heavy fog down south this morning. Not sure about north side? Could have possible played a role.
A fairly long way from Yass, so not a casual cyclist. Something nasty happened, anyway.

I didn't know this chap personally, other than reading about the team, but very sorry to hear it ended this way.

I just heard that this was Robbie Williams who rode for Drapac. I just lost a mate.

Man, heart attack! Crazy stuff. Second athlete I have known this year. Other was a former colleague who died at the Aust MTB champs at Stromlo a month or so ago. Very sad.
Meanwhile, adding to the sadness, fellow 3Fidi rider Nicko finally succumbed to his illness after a 4 year battle this afternoon. Very sad day indeed. Condolences to all the families.
