Thieves steal 40 bicycles worth $300k from Fyshwick
DateAugust 7, 2012 - 7:31AM
About 40 high performance bicycles with an extimated value of about $300,000 have been stolen from a trailer in Fyshwick over the weekend, police have said.
An investigation has begun into the theft of the 2013 Trek brand bicycles, which police say were stolen sometime between 8pm Friday and 9am yesterday.
The push bikes were being stored in a secure trailer on Townsville Street in Fyshwick.
Police believe the bikes, which are high-performance models not yet available to the public, were loaded into an unidentified vehicle over a period of about an hour.
Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity on Townsville Street at the weekend is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

I feel sorry for them but am not really surprised. I've got a $4k bike and don't let it out of my sight unless locked up with multiple locks. Why on earth would you leave $300k worth of goods in a trailer in Fyshwick over the weekend without surveillance etc? Surely some of the self storage places around town cater for storage of similar sized trailers etc.
And from what I've read elsewhere the trailer wasn't exactly concealed. Apparently it's been parked outside their office for weeks and screams TREK Bicycles inside me!

I had a bicycle stolen once, in the USA, but through quick action, managed to get it back.
My weekend group rides end at a coffee shop in Nundah, and we often leave up to 10 bikes out the front, and often sit inside during winter.
Just thinking of the bike values - say $4500 average replacement value = $45,000 of unlocked bikes.
We're going to have to start locking them up.

The trailer may have been secured but the car park it was sitting in wasn't, plus you could hide behind one side whilst you went ahead and opened it.
The shop next door to the carpark is an Ali Babas, didn't Ali Baba have something to do with 40 thieves? (40 Bikes) just saying.

40 bikes taken with an estimation that it took around an hour to remove them from the container.
Sounds like someone did not set there security up all that well.
