For those interested, EccoVelo has a bit of a write-up on their recent build using a Supernova E3 and a Shimano Afline dynamo.

I do have to disagree with this con Limited to use on one bike
With the Supernova Gold contacts you can have one setup on the front to the dynamo and one setup on the rear to the E3 rear so can be simply unplugged and swapped to another bike with a dynamo on it. I could have done that, but Supernova had upgraded their lights. If one of mine does die, I will wire it up that way and be swappable between bikes.

Peter White Cycles has details on a new SON dynamo, called the newSON28 (why can't they make the models names distinct? ). Anyway according to Peter White

The new for 2012 SON28 is lighter than the previous version, has a bit less drag, and is styled much like the SONdelux. They will be available in polished (as shown) and black anodized; 32 and 36 hole drillings; standard connector or SL, and three basic types: non-disc as shown above, a Centerlock disc version and a version for ISO disc, both shown below. Since the flange diameter is smaller than the current hub, 40 and 48 hole drilling isn't possible, so the current hub will continue to be made in 40 and 48 hole drillings.

I couldn't find anything on the SON website about them as yet.

I too have a rigida andra CSS rim with the Son28 dynamo. Used 256mm spokes on it. .

I am looking going to place an order with Starbike.com for a SON hub so just double checking if I may that the SON 28 in black as shown at Starbike.com is the same one as you got? The dynamo names just confuse me.

Those pics are off the latest Son28 which is an incarnation of the Sondelux just to confuse you and lighter than the original.
The original is now called Son 28 Classic.
If you want the Son28 then the one in the pic is probably the one to go for as its the new and improved lightened version.

It appears that starbike wont be selling the classic.

My SON 28 dynamo arrived during the week. I had Starbike.com lace it into a 36 spoke Mavic A719 rim using DT Swiss Competition 2.0/1.8/2.0 mm spokes (288 mm long). The wheel building btw cost $26.00.

I'm considering the Supernova Infinity 8 at this stage. It's on bike24 and I'm in no rush at this stage to get it as it will be a next year project for me. It will be using it across 2 bikes. My new recumbent and my Masi. I will most likely mount 28mm tyres one stage and do a comparison between the son28 classic and the Supernova Infinity 8

I'm struggling to find their warranty information on their website.
Any idea if they match the five year warranty of all Son products?

Just contacted them asking that The Supernova Infinity 8 Hub Dynamo has 2 flanges sizes are different! For a front hub 2 different sizes spokes. So for touring you need to be carring upto 4 different spoke length... 2 different lengths for rear and for the front hub. Also would love to know and will have to contact them if the hub can be turned off from the head for it. Will be a pain for turning it off or on if you have to stop and get the tool out to turn it on when it is needed.

Different spoke flanges ?? That kinda sucks. But I must admit that I have not broken a spoke on the touring bike since before 1993 - good quality ss spokes have a lot going for them. So spoke length problems are unliklely to bother me.

Re. the switching, I believe there is no tool involved. The light is switched by the large ring on the side of the hub, easly hand-operated. You could of course use the switch on a dyno headlight like the Supernova E3, but the ring-switch will apparently remove all dyno drag.

Right side flange is 91mm, left side is 88mm. Guess they did that for weight weenies rather than simplicity. But at least for wheelbuilding purposes they have given out all the technical information so spokes can easily be calculated.

I have a strong suspicion that these guys are the designer, or even the Chinese manufacturer, for Supernova. Two models with virtually identical features. A case of badge engineering in bicycle components?

I like the video they have on the website claiming to be the smoothest rolling.
I put my Son28 up on my wheel stand for wheelbuilding.
40+ seconds with no light on
20 seconds with light on
Seems to me that what supernova and sp-dynamo are offering with a switch, Son28 is providing automatically

Looks like it. If it has the difference flange sizes as the Supernova does it would be a pretty close to confirmation I suspect.

Personally I will stick with SON and/or Shimano I think.

The disc version looks totally different.

I suggest everyone with a son28 do a spin test to confirm my idea. Supernova and sp-designs have modelled themselves on the son28. Internals similar but both have a on/off switch which the son28 appears to automatically provide.

No, the Schmidt always has a very small amount of drag from the magnets. Supernova (and SP) somehow totally disconnect them.

You quoted 40secs for the SON28 roll with light off. Have another look at that SP video, when completely switched off it rolls for over 2mins.

Whether this is of any great consequence is the real question. I doubt that it is. Peter White quotes drag figures of 5ft in a mile (~1m in a kilometre) for the SON28 with the light off. Most cyclists would not discern a 1 in 1000 grade as anything different to flat road
