Sooner we get our version of the "PS poser" units in our Police that drive around and get these cars off the road the better.

From yesterday morning’s ABC News is the ongoing problems following a catastrophic fatal collision south of Gladstone in Qld.

ABC media quotes a local (Bundaberg) Highway Patrol officer :

“this morning I haven’t driven 20 kilometres north (from Bundaberg) and I’ve written 4 speeding tickets well over 115 km(/hr) already
People need to slow down and start driving to the conditions
You’re not going to get there any quicker
You’re just putting yourselves and other members of the public at risk”

The fatal collision on Friday morning resulted in an Ammonium Nitrate explosion which has caused significant damage to the roadway (Bruce Highway, main arterial between Brisbane and North Queensland) and the highway will be closed for some time - possibly days or weeks

By the way, I am not insinuating that the fatal collision on the Friday (which caused the explosion) was in anyway itself due to negligent driving behaviour. The cause of the crash remains unknown at this stage.

That's what I always assume - they are clearly indicating that they are a hazard with barely any driving ability so keep clear!

I should upload the video of the Mazda rotary pest that is back again. He seemed to be off the road for a while but is back at it street racing and hoon driving again. Twice today within an hour. Didn't get his first effort on video sadly, his second one I did - not close enough to get the number plate clearly but I know what the rego is.

Perhaps sending it off to the local MP will get a prompt response. Because this guy is going to crash sooner or later either on his own or taking out other innocent people.

992 911 on the M4 motorway at night going east (near Parramatta) - absolutely flying, at least double the speed limit - went past me like I stopped.

Almost asked for confirmation in the safety board, but as the bicycle crossing is some distance from the road intersection in question I'm pretty sure I had right of way: Coming home after dark tonight on the Hobart cycleway I was about to cross Bay Rd from the East and had to slam the brakes as a hatchback came absolutely flying around the roundabout corner from the direction of the hockey ground. Thankfully I already slow quite a bit on the approach as structures and terrain block a lot of vision until you're out on the footpath, but what alarmed me was this car didn't appear (the embankment to the right blocks vision more than a few metres down that street) until after I'd made my visual check and started to accelerate again, and was moving fast enough I don't think I'd have cleared that lane before they got there. I didn't see any signs of slowing down as they approached the roundabout, I suppose the logic would be that since the roundabout was clear and they weren't crossing a lane it's fine to take the blind corner at speed.
I'm also guessing I got unlucky and met the person in the biggest hurry to leave after a match, as after a several second gap there was a steady stream of cars from that direction at a much more leisurely pace.

Sometimes if you are crossing from a path you just have to get off the bike and walk in these situations.

It’s fine to argue points of law but they won’t save you if a car driver comes flying along. Safety first.

This is a pet peeve of mine that there is a large proportion of people that still don't understand the concept of how to approach, enter and exit a roundabout.. or they do know the rules, but just have a total disregard for others safety..

I agree with g-boaf in that you need to consider your own safety first and shouldn't assume that others follow the law, but also and when possible, don't yield to them in all cases which reinforces their bad behaviour. For example when I'm driving and approaching a roundabout at say 20km/h and I'm 10m away from the roundabout, but see a car to my right (not slowing down) doing 40km/h at 50m away, I'll enter the roundabout slowly like I'm allowed to, which makes them slow down (hit the brakes hard), like they're supposed to
easy to enforce in a car, not so much on a bike..

One of the many breakthroughs in motorised transport that evolved in the UK.
Like Pneumatic tyres, for example.

Problem is that just because it works in well in the UK (and some other countries) - does not guarantee that it is going to work as well in Australia.

The mass deployment of Roundabouts started in the UK in the late 1950s and continued rapidly throughout the 1960’s.

Why don’t roundabouts work in Australia these days?
Roundabouts are most effective when most or all of the vehicles are reduced to approximately 30 km/hr - or less.

Back in the 1960’s the average motor car had much more restricted cornering dynamics than cars that came off the production line 20 years later.
A 1960’s car had skinny cross-ply tyres, upright stance and (usually) unassisted drum brakes.

So had to slow down more to go around corners.
Nowadays, most cars have massive tyres and powerful brakes that allow moron motorists to power through roundabouts at speeds that make roundabouts much less effective.
Furthermore, vehicles are a lot bigger than they used to be and some morons just drive over the top of (some) roundabouts.

Other aspects of modern car design don’t help - such as bigger blindspots due to thicker A-pillar design and reduced windscreen clarity, due to tinting, stickers, grime and glare.
And a lot of roundabouts in Australia are either way too small or way too big or an unusual shape
And sometimes have too many plants in their centre etc.

That’s the problem but I have no idea what the solution is.
It’s pretty sad really. On roundabouts you see all sorts of dingbat behaviours.
Such as people who stop and give way to cars that are a long way off actually entering the roundabout (from the right)
My guess is that many of these people must have in the past been road raged by the roundabout bullies who think that the “give way to the speeding moron on the right” Road rule.
