I was taking it easy just to make sure my ankle didn’t flare up. Still had reasonable speed. Only problem was temp:
Min 4°C and average temp 8°C. Brrrr!

I could stand about 70 minutes of that. I shall stick to the proper hilly routes. It did however put paid to any ideas I might have had about doing that ride IRL seeing the way the others in the video went about it.

I broke away from second pack with 70 km to go, solo for 55 km and still feeling strong only to get a puncture 15 km out, and then watch most of the group pass me while i faffed about trying to fix it.
I was a tad annoyed

It’s a funny one depending on where you start it from. Can include the Gyndier Drive ascent as well which makes it 6.23km/173m but the kicker is the last 1.12km/7.1%.
Probably could plan my efforts a bit better but took 7 top 10s up there today including 2nd overall for the climb from Cooroy-Noosa Road. Probably need fresher legs but think I could ultimately get all of them.
Good to get some actual practice pacing a climb rather than just going to VO2Max and seeing what fails first!

You need to get down to the high country and do some longer climbs. That'll make you pace yourself

https://theclimbingcyclist.com/climbs/m ... t-buffalo/The stunning ascent of Mt. Buffalo in Victoria’s north-east is among the easiest of the Victorian Alps climbs. But, at a touch under 21km, the climb still demands strength and fitness of riders who are keen to partake in the breathtaking summit views.
Keen to go back and do a few more. Maybe in springtime.

If you get a chance, do a Haute Route in France, join Two Wheel Tours because he organises everything well above even the level of the HR organisation itself. Go and attack those big HC climbs - a couple of them per day and 7 days in a row. You’ll smash it and come back even stronger.Mr Purple wrote: ↑Mon Jul 01, 2024 10:31 amFound a decent steep climb up here at Noosa - Tinbeerwah Lookout.

My effort today was Col de la Madeleine on Fulgaz with the whole lot at 247w average. Average HR 170bpm and average cadence 74.
Not max effort but hard. I paced that quite well keeping the power very steady the whole way.

I need to get back there too! Great riding. Buffalo is one of my favourite climbs of the ones I've done.am50em wrote: ↑Mon Jul 01, 2024 6:25 pmI've only done the easy one starting from Bright:https://theclimbingcyclist.com/climbs/m ... t-buffalo/The stunning ascent of Mt. Decided to give the trainer a go for the first time in a few months.
Nup, did about 3km and I gave up. Zero motivation for it. Don't know how you guys do it!

Easy - because if I’m sitting around feeling sorry for myself then I feel even worse knowing fitness is slipping away, and it does very quickly for me.ningnangnong wrote: ↑Tue Jul 02, 2024 2:50 pmConstant deluge here today, and looking ominous for the week ahead.

So I’m going to give it everything I have.
Plus I do Fulgaz with some stunning climbs. Today I went to Andorra and 17km with 1100m+.
It’s a tough effort but also sightseeing.
Andorra looks quite nice for riding…. Hmmm…
If it was Zwift then yeah, boring as heck listening to the arguments and going along like robotic drones on the same old rolling hills courses.

I agree, but unfortunately don't think I'll get the chance to head off to Europe any time soon!g-boaf wrote: ↑Mon Jul 01, 2024 7:16 pmIf you get a chance, do a Haute Route in France, join Two Wheel Tours because he organises everything well above even the level of the HR organisation itself. Did 'Mendelpass from Kalterer See' on Fulgaz today targeting the main segment KOM which is 14.71km/6% on 'WhatsOnFulgaz'. Unfortunately there's some sort of technical issue with the one I rode, so that segment wasn't recognised despite me taking the KOM by three minutes with 44:41/283W. Will have to do it again!
In this sort of weather it's actually possible to do those sorts of climbs in the garage. Not pleasant, but possible.

I still need to do Timmelsjoch. The year I was supposed to ride that the weather closed in and it was closed by snow.
Col de Vars is another good one, not especially steep but long, it's quite enjoyable.
For full difficulty, do Col de Vars first and then immediately after do Col de la Bonette. Haute Route sometimes puts those two together and then follows it up to Auron (which is also up quite a hill).
The catch with that route is you feel great on Col de Vars and it's quite enjoyable so you push, then you get to Bonette and "oh crap" and feel pretty rubbish two-thirds of the way up Bonette because it is so long and high up and gets very steep near the end.
You don't get the full effect in Fulgaz because we are still relatively near sea level and not going up to 2800m+.

I know it's stupid chasing virtual KOMs, but it does give me the motivation! I need a lot of motivation to get anywhere near FTP indoors for over half an hour.

Anything by Carlo Fino is genuine, same with Ruari Grant. I know those two from real life. (edit: can't see their times anymore.. hmm).
Ignore #25 Peter Pouly...

Good call. The guy I'm talking about above (first name Maxime) is two minutes faster up the Mendelpass than the real life KOM holder. Set in the 2016 Giro.
I think that tells you everything you need to know about his legitimacy or otherwise!

There is a Maxime that is an ex-pro cyclist from Belgium.
This is the roadbook with the days and dates: https://issuu.com/haute_route/docs/hr18 ... book_issuu
Page 36 is the one you are after, Risoul-Auron.
It's a shame we don't have the climb from Guillestre to Risoul, that's very fun IRL as well with the switch backs. 7,1km over 442m and 6.2% average.
What wasn't fun was coming round the final corner full speed and seeing a lady walking her dog with the leash extending across the road. She quickly moved thank god.

I did 20km of it and that was enough - my legs were on holiday today anyhow. No power at all.

This guy's French, and he does have a cyclist listing as a single cyclocross event about a decade ago but I don't think he's a pro. The FTP greater than Lance Armstrong at his (highly illegal) best is a giveaway that all is not legit.
Timmelsjoch looks to be 30km/6%. Ouch!

it's a lot worse than that because it has a hefty big flat section in the middle of it so it's easily steeper in places. It's not like Zoncolan or Lavaze, it's just very looong and exhausting because of that.Mr Purple wrote: ↑Thu Jul 04, 2024 8:47 amThis guy's French, and he does have a cyclist listing as a single cyclocross event about a decade ago but I don't think he's a pro. Another good one for you is Col d'Izoard - it's pretty easy and not terribly steep, but it also has a slightly flat/downhill part so it's two halves. IRL it's a nice one with good road surface and pretty wide on the way up from Briançon side:
Col du Galibier is another big one that's worth doing - but make sure you go from the Valloire side because that's the long and famous climb everyone wants to do because it goes up to 2600m+. It starts out easy enough but gets steep near the top so leave some fuel in the tank for the final part.
