Cycling computer through the wash

Yep, not my greatest moment
Had my edge 1030+ in my jacket pocket ready for a wash. Stripped off and bunged all my gear in the wash. Without taking the 1030 out of my pocket.
The screen is now nice and clean.
Have it in a bowl of rice in front of the fire. I wont be turning it on for at least 24h. Any other ideas?
I expect it is toast. Bloody good computer that is not that old. It was a refurbished unit that has been great. Back to the 1000 whilst I look for another most likely.

Not going to try to open it. Guaranteed to be broken with passion fingers here, trying to prise the screen free.

Pissed me off too. Be surprised if it works again. I'll ring Garmin service and see what they say, may be able to send me another refurbished one if it is toast. Hopefully cheaper than a new 1040. Dont want to go smaller screen and love the battery life on this one

Well I used the old edge 1000 today. Still works. Battery was flat after not being used since Oct '22 but charged ok. Perhaps the battery is past its' best. ~13% battery used per hour with radar and PM pedals connected. The 1030+ uses les than 3% per hour.
Had trouble uploading the ride though. Connected it to my phone multiple times but it kept dropping out. Connected it to wifi. Nup wouldn't upload. As we all know, unless a ride is on Strava it didn't actually happen.
Anyway after I got frustrated at the lack of success I decided to plug it into the computer. Logged onto Garmin express and there the edge 1000 is "retired". Deleted it and jumped back on Garmin Connect on my phone and added it again. Success! Uploaded.
In the midst of trying to connect and getting frustrated, bugger it I turned the edge 1030+ on
Yes!! Started up as normal and is now on charge!
Very happy with that. A stupid proof device it seems to be.

Yep, very impressed with that! It aint going to bat its' eye at riding in any sort of rain. 45minutes in a washing machine with detergent added. It was a cold wash though.

If the charge port bung was in place, it is a non-event, in cold water.
If it had been a hot wash, that would delaminate the screen and burst the LCD matrix = buy a new 'puter...

I've had a pricey Tissot watch left in a jumper pocket go through the cold water (40 minutes; I never use hot water in the wash) and all that did was the detergent ruining the napa leather band.

Phones though are much less amenable to being put in a spin, at any temperature, for any length of time. My first iPhone came to grief way back in 2010.

The charge port cover is just a clip in plastic part. It was moist inside. I am assuming the plug inside is sealed against water entering the housing.

I would go a step further and use a vacuum cleaner against the port to suck out any moisture you can see or feel.
Maybe a wet-dry vac, just in case the unit springs a surprise on you with a torrent of water!!

I once accidentally put my Garmin heart rate monitor through the wash. It survived, but it is a lot more robust than a cycling computer.

As per am50em it is supposed to be IPX7 rated. Turns out that wasn't a lie.

left my Varia in pocket and washed it ... all was good...mind you only a 15min cycle at 20degs as that's what I use for sports stuff and works fine....machine has a "sports cycle" 40mins at 30degs seems a bit excessive unless you have teenage young men

Jeez Warty...you dodged a bullet there mate......how lucky was that? best to leave it on the bike till you need to charge it.......maybe!!

Yeah I was going to charge it. Just forgot to take it out of the jacket pocket and put it on charge before the jacket went in the (cold) wash.

In the pocket to bring it onsime and put it on charge. Not doing that again, in my hand in future.
Mine isn't that old, a bit under 2 years. 35-40 hours battery life per charge I reckon. >3% per hour and I always have power pedals and varia radar connected.

Yeah I run a single power meter, ANT+ heart rate, Varia Radar and the 1030 also connects to my Di2. I’ll probably buy a 1050 although I did see a near new 1040 Solar going for $600 on FB in my area.
