It might be mainly to function as a chain tensioner.
My understanding is that on single-speed drivetrains you need to have the correct amount of chain tension to make it work properly.
I guess that this is even more important in a device like this which generates forces that are much greater than just human leg power.

Used to be one around my way - the derailleur, like the chain and pedals, is purely decorative - driven on the throttle via a rear hub motor so there's no power going through the chainAnrai wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2024 9:20 pmIt might be mainly to function as a chain tensioner.

Says it's 12000W and goes 110km/h.
Too expensive for me. Although it'd be good for blasting up some of the steep local trails.

110km/h on a vehicle shaped like that? Sounds like a recipe for instant organ donor. I think this is one of the reasons I DON'T buy anything from Ali Express: they don't seem to spend any time keeping up to date on the laws of their customer's countries, to see if they're trying to sell something that can't actually be legally used. Even if they can legally sell such items, it's ethically questionable.tpcycle wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 2:39 pmhttps://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005188639036.html

Anyone who spends $14k on something like that clearly really doesn't want to pay registration. That'd be a decent road registered dirt bike.

Tailed me at 35km/hr+ average for 5km southbound (the northern part, so it's pretty hilly) lazily turning the pedals on his flatbar converted mountainbike. Then took off doing 50km/hr+ uphill on the climb leading up to the new O'Keefe Street bridge.
Moron. No idea why he was sitting so close without passing given he clearly had over 1kW at his disposal. And if you're going to do that at least give me a draft rather than blasting past twisting your e-throttle thanks!
If the bike doesn't kill him another cyclist will.

Probably overheating motor, had to let it cool before continued.Mr Purple wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 9:23 amRan into an idiot on an actual e-bike today on the veloway, as opposed to the usual scooter.

They may not be a good idea to you, but I can assure you they do have their place!
e-scooters have been shown by spot studies to work well integrated into multimodal transport systems in the city (tram, train, bus, walking., etc), but with considerably less efficacy and timeliness in regional and country areas e.g. Ballarat. The behaviour being seen by e-scooter riders (predominantly) is due to the fact they were introduced to the market quickly and fall into an unregulated (ergo, not legislated) grey area. Inconveniently, this has left the gates wide open to abuse. That grey area has opened up the environment to seeing them being used as a brutal form of law-flouting, intimidation and ignorance, beside being ridden at excessive speeds and where they are clearly not permitted to be. By and by, it is adults who are committing the sins, not children riding e-scooters to school or students to University. We see this (and a lot more!) in the Melbourne City e-scooter Trial; all of the problems of behaviour, speed, reckless endangerment, riding without helmets etc., DIU, etc have been brought to the State Government's notice (with no response), but again very recently, the trial — green-ticked by the State Government, rather than halted to sort out legislation and regulatory paths, was again extended, pretty much flabbergasting the Melbourne City Council that needs to know what is happening going forward, so that infrastructure can be properly investigated incorporated into the road landscape (separated lanes for e-devices and bikes, for example).
I am not interested in the childish populist carnival barking of Facebook, and that certainly is not the sort of place you'd go seeking facts.

Wow, so almost every person there scoffs at the laws governing them and proclaims they won't obey footpath speed limits. Very worrying, no wonder NSW is still banning them (though kids here seem to be immune to enforcement and appear to still freely use them).jasonc wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 5:25 pmRead the comments

and sadly these are the people riding these things. and we have to interact with them, share paths, roads, footpaths with them.uart wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 7:03 pmWow, so almost every person there scoffs at the laws governing them and proclaims they won't obey footpath speed limits. But what about those cyclists complaining about escooter riders being the problem while at the same time disregarding similar laws that apply to them?? What about all the cyclists disobeying the 10kph speed limits? (remember you did 30kph+ in one today) What about cyclists disobeying the 20kph speed limits on our bikeways? (yes you did this twice once again 30kph+) What about you disobeying the 50kph speed limit on Mt Coottha? (you have been finned previously and last time you were there did 70kph and 75kph respectively).jasonc wrote: ↑Mon Jul 01, 2024 8:14 amand sadly these are the people riding these things. and we have to interact with them, share paths, roads, footpaths with them.uart wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 7:03 pmWow, so almost every person there scoffs at the laws governing them and proclaims they won't obey footpath speed limits. That's besides the point. Speed limits and laws apply to escooters just as they apply to cyclists and motor vehicle drivers regardless of the circumstances. Isn't that the point everyone is trying to make? Or are we now cherry picking laws that best suits? Replace jasons bike with an escooter and suddenly people loose their minds. Even if we don't replace jasons bike that's still a $500 fine should a police officer be standing on the bridge which does happen on the Kurilpa and Goodwill Bridges where there are 20kph speed limits.warthog1 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 01, 2024 7:50 pmInteresting? Really? Do we expect Jason is doing 30+ kmh past pedestrians? Placing others in danger by passing them at speed? If he indeed did do 30kmh in a speed limited area I am confident it wouldn't have been done whilst placing others in danger, contrasting with the videos of e-scooter riders we see on here regularly. We also read other regular sensible posters relating the selfish behaviour regularly exhibited on shared paths by e-scooter riders.
I'm not meaning to pick on Jason but considering it was on the Kurilpa bridge over the Brisbane river at 4.30pm I'd say there would have been a high chance of other pedestrian, cyclist and escooter traffic about in both directions. But still regardless going nearly double the speed of that shared zone speed limit.

You blindly quoting a speed from a strava ride without any reference of what is around does not equal the vision regularly posted and others writing on here of illegal scooters doing dumb and dangerous speeds in close proximty to others.
There is also a dumb pedestrians and cyclists thread where stupid cyclist behaviour is called out, so it isn't as if cyclists are exempt from criticism when they do stupid things as you seem to suggest.
"I am not meaning to pick on Jason" Really?
There are multiple instances in this thread of you having a go at Jason when he dares to call out stupid scooter behaviour.

I'm also sure there's a number of cycling laws users here would argue against. Here it's illegal to ride while out of the saddle, or take both hands off the bars. Hobart's cycleway also features a stop signed crossing that people pretty regularly just blow through if there's no cars coming, and I remember reading a post somewhere on these forums where someone got booked for not putting a foot down at a stop sign.
