11s GRX gear lever not engaging
Postby warthog1 » Sun Jun 23, 2024 4:19 pm
All good on the bb front.
It was in the small ring as I always leave my bikes. Shifted up into the big ring as normal. Wouldn't go back into the small ring though. The shift lever just seemed like it wouldn't engage. Full range of movement with no click and no resistance. It has done that once previously but started shifting again after briefly refusing to.
Anyway got home and after a shower had a look with my glasses on. The cable was intact with no fraying. The spings and guts of the shifter were a bit of a mess with what looked like mud. I had given it a spray with silicone lube prior to putting my glasses on and it was now a congealed mess of dirt and silicone spray.
Gave it a squirt with the garden hose on the jet setting and it is clean again and shifting the front rings up and down nicely.
Have put it up on the rack to dry. I plan to give it another squirt with silicone spray tomorrow when dry. Does that sound like the right stuff to spray it with?
I also have white lithium grease in a spray can, and motorex 2000 in a spray can. I figure both of them are going to collect dust worse than silicone spray though? Given it is a gravel bike there is going to be dust.

This came up on a google search;

Just unsure it is the correct stuff to use on a gravel bike where dust is an issue?

There is a cover on the GRX levers you can remove. So I did that. Not pretty.
Flushed them out with a whole heap of WD40. Got some of that ptfe spray to try. Will do that once the bars are swapped over.
Gravel needs more maintenance than this dodgy roadie is accustomed to.

Take the lever off and soak it in some rust remover, I've never seen that before.warthog1 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2024 10:58 amHmm a bit more investigation today. Going to go back to my aluminium bars as I have overtightened the hoods and damaged the carbon ones

Sprayed half a can of wd40 into it and all good. Sprayed them with ptfe spray. Have it all back together with my aluminium bars back on and new bar tape. Shifting well now.

Maybe that’s one more reason to go 1x on gravel bikes
Running for cover now….

That is the R hand shifter. So rear gears anyway. Bigger gaps and less range with 1×. Not seeing the point personally and it gets used on the road at times too.

That is 21300k with an obvious lack of maintenance.
Need to lift my game. It needs new steerer bearings also by the feel of it. Got to buy some tools to bleed and manage shimano disc brakes.

I did this recently. Learned a lot on the job. A bleed kit and a barb setting tool are all you need.
No need to spend $100 on a tool, either: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006172205570.html
Thanks for the reminder to peel back the hoods of the most used bikes and give them a once over!

Ordered that tool.
What bleed kit do you recommend?

Worth checking which version of the threaded port your levers have. I had to make an adapter becuase Shimano have changed the thread size between models and now make an adapter.
Refer https://bicycles.net.au/forums/viewtopi ... 5#p1611554 and a few subsequent posts.
Shimano part number Y0C698050 is the adapter between the different threads.

One for mineral oil, most shimano stuff, and another for synthetic dot fluid so they don't cross contaminate.
