Reshaping Sydney - ripping up cycling infrastructure

Postby g-boaf » Mon Apr 10, 2023 11:30 am

Thought a mega thread could be created for the instances where council or government rip up cycling infrastructure.

First example: Canada Bay Council:

https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/kne ... 5cym2.html

Only opened months ago, now to be ripped up after state government funding provided to help build it.

The money spent building this should now be returned back to the rest of the state.

Interesting. I live in the area & know the councillors. The Canada Bay clowncil has form - there used to be bike lanes that ran for most of Great North Road. These were removed in Wareemba & Five Dock to widen the footpaths for cafes etc & the painted bicycle symbols encourage cyclists to claim the lane - with the all too predictable response of blaring horns & dangerous passes. It is particularly bad at Five Dock where the hill significantly limits the speed of most cyclists. There is almost no safe paths across much of the area

My message to two of the councillors was be careful who you are voting with. If you find yourself agreeing with the morally corrupt & the intellectually bankrupt, it's time to start looking at what error led you to that position.

No doubt the hopeless consultants who have yet to find anything decent in a bike path. IIRC it is the same consultants used to come up with the 2005 bike plan which is occasionally dusted off & tweaked a bit with a new year but no actual work in progress
Anything you can do, I can do slower

The decision has been reversed.

Great work by Bicycle NSW CEO Peter McLean and the Advocacy team. especially in shining a light on the fact that residents weren't properly consulted and they wanted an adjustment, not a removal.

Disappointing that it took being shamed in the media for them to listen to the feedback all the respondents gave.

Not only does this vid kinda look like some parts of CB it is a simple message that maybe could be sent by email to all CBClowncillors every day until they kinda understand what could be/ should have been done and in the future will enviably be done with or without the current mob.

Residents left devastated as beloved cycleway is destroyed
A path designed to make active travel safer for a huge volume of people has seemingly been destroyed, leaving locals furious.

April 29, 2023 - 2:07PM

Regular users of a popular cycleway have been delivered the devastating news the route will no longer be viable after an unforgiving decision by the local council.

The green cycle path on Heath Street in Rodd Point, in Sydney’s inner west, began being ripped up this week, just five months after it was installed.

A photo shared to the Bicycle NSW Instagram page showed giant holes had been pried open along the former safe passageway.

“Heath Street Cycleway removed today. We’re sorry to all the parents whose kids can’t ride home safely, we’re sorry to all the riders who used Heath St as a connecting corridor and we’re sorry to all the prospective riders who were just that little bit closer to taking the final step and begin riding,” the advocacy group wrote in its post.

The path, which was part of a $7 million investment to link the Bay Run to Concord, had been a recent source of contention with the council, which has seemingly flip-flopped over whether it would be removed or not.

Council a few weeks ago said the pass would be torn up due to complaints from residents worried about traffic risks, issues with carparking, property access and low visibility.

“The separated cycleway in Heath St will be removed and replaced with a two-way mixed traffic arrangement as outlined in the attached plan,” a statement from a traffic committee meeting read.

Weeks later however the council reversed on its earlier comment, stating the path would not be removed, just modified.

“The council plans to modify (not remove) the section of cycleway at Heath Street,” a new Canada Bay Council statement said.

The photo shared this week indicates however the path might be disappearing for good.

Locals were devastated at the prospect of the cycleway being removed permanently.

“Removed? Huh? New development? So disappointing for kids’ safety and community enjoyment,” one person responded.

“So sad to see! Disappointed with Canada Bay,” another said.

“Extraordinary stupidity and backflip by Canada Bay, and all on the public purse,” a third wrote.

Time to abolish the council.

Talking of removing cycle infrastructure, Westconnex will not be reinstating the removed gutter access ramp from Victoria Rd to the Anzac bridge shared path. This ramp allowed cyclists to use Vic Rd until just before the intersection with the Crescent (was located on the old road overbridge). Advice is to now join the path earlier at Roberts Rd.

I'm struggling to identify any active transport improvements along Victoria Rd from Drummoyne to Pyrmont as a result of WestConnex, can anyone think of any positives to negate 3+ years of disruption?

Nope & the bit we are now forced to use highlights the real downsides in Victoria Rd - the massive number of poles & other barriers obstructing your safe passage

Heath St cycleway has now been completely removed. In its place are some white painted bicycle logos. (I guess this is what council meant by "modify")

This doesn't strictly fit the title of this thread, but cycling on motorways is slowly being phased out in Sydney:

- Westconnex removed cycling access to the M5 East motorway between King Georges Road and Bexley Road (and had the gall to describe closing then re-opening the M5 Linear Path running either side of the M5 as "new active transport links!")

- Westconnex removed cycling access to the M4 motorway from Church St to Silverwater Road, then also closed the mouse hole under Homebush Bay Drive too - https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/stu ... 51edx.html

- The M4 "Smart" motorway project then removed cyclist access to the M4 motorway between Mulgoa Road and Church Street.

- Did Northconnex remove some cycling access to the M1 from Round Corner northwards? Anything further north? Sparks Road?

- I believe some cycling access has been removed from the Warringah Freeway, due to the Harbour Tunnel works?

The next reduction will be the M7 Widening project removing access between Camden Valley Way and Richmond Road. Fortunately there is a high-quality shared path running parallel.

It seems the M2 (despite a lengthy detour during lengthy upgrade works) retained and even had improvements made to its cycling access, otherwise there might have been a riot.

Any others I missed?
