Any recommendations for Oakley sunglass replacement lenses? How about..

Postby Edith Crawley » Wed Jul 27, 2022 4:15 pm

I accidentally dropped my sunglasses on the ground while riding over the weekend and unfortunately the lenses were scratched. I desperately needed to buy a pair of replacement lenses to restore my sunglasses. My favorite Youtuber recommended [removed], which I've heard is a niche brand with pretty good quality and a cheap price. Any thoughts?

Put Fuse replacement Lens into Ebay or go direct. They (Fuse Lens US but cheap for post and very quick return) are very good or better then Oakley originals or most of the high ends brands. Also there is a company in Byron Bay also supplying quality lens for better brand sun glasses, which I have used for Maui Jim replacements.

Easy as!
Peugeot PBN10, Cell Victor 2, Graycross Special 27", Merida Mission 2000, Trek 4900, Cell Stinger.

I wasn’t that happy with 3rd party replacement lenses.

On the one hand, Oakley charge a sharp premium and they are priced too high. On the other, they have very good quality and cheap brands mostly struggle to get this level. While we (our eyes / brains) correct these flaws. Better is a better lens.

Until I get lens and test thrm, they are hard to judge, but I can usually identify the issues fairly quickly. Sorry, for these brands can’t say anything though.

Do you need prescription lenses? A few years ago I did a review of Shamir lenses, which I found ere very good. However, when refreshing the lenses this last time, I found the price relativity had changed and Oakley OEM prescription lenses were better value. Still expensive though.

I have tried third party lenses for my other frames and found they were a poor fit. To summarise AUBicycles above, in this space it seems you get what you pay for.

Oakley is a US Brand, check where and maybe who makes the sunglasses. Maui Jim come from Italy and Japan. Fuse use Zeiss Lens supplier which is quality and there is a huge range of options. Oakley also sell replacement lens so my Roof and Guttering tradie told me as do Wiley X etc. Maui Jim also have thin glass lens, but I have not seen these offered by sunglass replacement lens suppliers, but I guess they will cut any lens you want for the frames you have?

Thank you. I have purchased the Oakley replacement lenses and [removed]. I was wondering how they differ from the third party lenses cause they are really expensive. They're on their way and I can't wait!

At a glance, 3rd party could look good, the distortion is where they can suffer and though your eyes and brain naturally compensate (so it may not be obvious) they can fatigue your eyes faster.

Hold the glasses further away from you face ca. 10 cm and look through the lense at a point then move the glasses / lens as you concentrate on that point. Crap lenses quickly reveal distortion and good lenses have none, or much less.

Otherwise the science if lens colours is tougher to test and preference is more important, but I have had sunnies (siroko) that didn’t play well on any reflective surfaces (car windows ir even puddles) so is a distraction and shows a difference in this respect to expensive.

But yes… sunnies do feel more expensive that they need to be.

Has anyone used Oakley prescription sunglasses?
Can't read without corrective glasses now.
I would like some with photochromic lenses.

I am expecting them to cost much more than that with prescriptive lenses though.
Anyone got something similar?

I have found the $30 sunnies that Bunnings sell as safety glasses to be excellent. Polarised, impact resistant, very little distortion, come in my fav high contrast orange tint (as well a grey etc) and AS compliant of course. I previously had glass Spotters, Makos and Maui Jims but can't tell the difference, other than these are much lighter, making them far better for cycling to stop them slipping down my suncreened, sweaty nose...

I've bought a few pairs for various locations so I always have a pair to hand. And no more heartbreak when I run over them, lose them or wear them water skiing and lose them to the bottom of the lake...

I just forked out the best part of $400 for genuine Oakley prescription lens for my Jawbreakers (via EyeSports in Victoria)

Standard grey tint - nothing special.

Polarising would have added a further $100 or so, likewise for the iridium/mirror finish. I find the iridium finish does not last well anyway - scratches easily and starts to flake after a few years.

I have. I use Oakley Flak 2.0 XL frames and their prescription lenses. I use their clear-to-mid-grey tint photochromic, unpolarised. The reason I went this path is that I frequently commute before and after dark, and have been known to race mountain bikes in 24hr events at stupid o'clock in the morning.

They are clear at night, but dark enough during the day to be comfortable all day. They also respond fast enough so that you're not suddenly blind when going from bright sunlight into shaded singletrack.

I went unpolarized because polarized lenses don't work with most LCD screens. I need to be able see my bike computer screen for speed and power numbers.

You can't get prescription lenses for the single wraparound polycarbonate sheet style of lens/frame. It needs to be a discrete and separate left and right lens type.

I have astigmatism, so I chose to prioritise distance vision for my script. I can't remember what they cost, but my health fund covered about half. This is the frame and lens shape, except my frame is white:

I don't mind them at all and that sounds like just the tint I need.
Thanks :)

You're welcome, warty. :D

They're light, and give you enough peripheral vision range that approaching traffic can be seen with a head-check without falling off the edge the lens's coverage.

They probably don't give you quite the coverage from the wind from the current crop of "snow goggle" style mono-lenses, but if you need prescription lenses, they're not a bad option, and if you get fogged up at a stop they clear quite quickly.
