Recommend some quality pads for v-brakes

Postby Retrobyte » Mon May 02, 2022 9:40 pm

The new Shimano S65T pads I bought for my Specialised Sirrus flat bar commuter lasted 3 weeks in wet and muddy conditions. The fact that I'm not a lightweight and was lugging some weight in a pannier bag with a bit of stop/start for traffic lights probably meant they were working hard at times, but I would have expected them to last longer than this - they went from brand new to be fully worn out in that time period. Brakes were set up properly with no rubbing.

I picked up some Shimano Deore pads on the weekend and replaced them, but am now starting to geek out about whether there are better pads out there I can try when these wear out. Rims are aluminium (Pro Lite - Kotavelo). I guess I'd like a combination of both good stopping ability and reasonable wear, if that's possible.

No brake pads will last very long under the conditions you describe.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

What Duck says. There’s a reason bus & garbage truck operators spend a lot on brake spares

But Koolstop Salmon is the traditional answer.

Also, don’t “ride” the brakes when going down hill: that puts a lot of work through the brakes( better to brake hard for a while then coast).

If the bike is muddy at the end of the ride, wash the crap off.

Finally, check your rims for wear every time you change pads

Thanks. I have been hosing the bike down when I get home from work, and once a week do a proper clean and lube. The bike paths on my commute still have dirty water flowing across it in places so it's been an abnormal commute environment lately. I've ordered some Kool Stop pads so will give them a shot too, thanks for the suggestion.

Suggest you try and find solid block pads like these if you want long lasting pads

Have had some cx canti pads wear out very quickly because they are designed to do just that - the gutters on the pads work to shed mud and slush and still stop

The old Scott Mathauser pads did last for a long time under the conditions you describe but they are no longer made - used them with canti brakes and think that a solid pad with v-brakes should offer enough power to get enough stopping grunt even if you are beefy and carry a load.

Didnt the Scott Mathauser pads became the Koolstop Scott pads after koolstop bought them up? But I don't think those ones fit v-brakes, too high profile (but I guess depends on the setup..)

I like koolstop, but have also found swissstop to be great.

Koolstop make a huge range of pads and inserts, not just the classic Mathauser ones. But salmon is still the secret sauce

I don't have any very helpful suggestions for that bike sorry.
Disc brakes will be a better solution for the next one

Canti vs V-brake compatibilty is more to do with threadless or threaded post mounting rather than pad profile. There are exceptions on both sides, but generally-speaking, cantis use threadless-post pads, while V-brakes use threaded posts.

Threaded-post pads use dish & dome washers to adjust toe angle; the dished washers are unequal thickness, so can be flipped between inner & outer placement to tune the caliper setup.

Yes, that's my medium term plan - to buy a second hand gravel bike as my commuter to replace the Sirrus. I'm selling some non-bike related stuff to fund that purchase.
