Lock recommendations for commuter bike

I'm changing jobs and in a few weeks will be able to commute to work for the first time in many years. I believe the location has decent end of trip facilities and later this year are moving to a brand new building that will have the best available end of trip facilities. It's a flat 10km easy ride so I will probably ride my Specialised flat bar hybrid instead of my roadie.

In my entire life (60 years!) I've never owned a bike lock because when I've commuted in the past I could take the bike into my office, and at other times I ride I don't leave my bike unattended anyway, so I am a total bike lock noob.

Suggestions for locks please?

I have a couple of Kryptonite cable locks with keys. They seem quite light and effective and long enough to go through both wheels and around a pole. Works for me.

What’s the parking situation? Public street, company yard open to public, secure basement parking etc? cameras and security guards?

My last commute was a secure yard so all o used was a basic keyed cable lock to stop pranksters. Similar with the odd occasion the kids ride to school, but combination cable lock so they can’t lose keys. Both are OK for a quick trip into the shops too, but not suited for an extended or regular stay anywhere public.

If parking on the public street is want a decent D shackle lock with a cable to thread through wheels. I’d also consider switching any QR levers for something more secure, even just a basic Allen bolt.

If you need a heavy lock at work, you can often leave them on site and not bother carting to and fro.

I'm not 100% sure yet - will find out more this week. I think they were taken aback that one of the first questions I asked after they offered me the job was what the end of trip facilities for cyclists were like. The person I was dealing with wasn't across that, so more info coming tomorrow.

I haven't ridden the hybrid since I returned to road bikes in 2020, so gives me an excuse to give it some TLC and find the panniers and bags which are in a box somewhere.

You want your bike to be less attractive to thieves, either because its more secure than others & / or it's less desirable, preferably both.
