New bike - Security Skewer replacement advice

Postby Deronys » Wed Jan 19, 2022 9:57 am

Hi folks,

I've got an XDS E-Volve on the way and I'd like to replace the QR skewers with something a little more secure so that I only have to carry around one lock, and remove the temptation for someone to cut a cable and take the wheel for funsies.

Being relatively new to bikes, is anyone able to help decipher this so I can buy an appropriate replacement?
Hub spec:
Front: XDS Alloy with Quick release (14G×36H M9×100×108mm, 270-F, 115mm)
Rear: Joytech 9 Speed with Quick Release (14G×36H M10×135×145)

Or should I wait until I receive it, pull it apart and measure it myself?
Any recommendations on security skewers to suit?

Thanks in advance!

The lengths of 100 and 135 are MTB QR standard. Pretty much any QR option should fit, except anything that says it's specifically for road bikes only (130mm length between dropouts).

These should be fine if you don't care about needing a special key that you will probably lose:

Q/R skewers are typically measured by overall length rather than frame spacing, and they have a bit of tolerance to play with to allow for different spacings. Security skewers usually come as a set, including a seatpost one, so you get the special key for all three. Although there are some that use a normal 5mm allen key, the proper security skewers use a pentagonal key, which the average bick-nicking scumbag won't even know about.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
