Aesthetics - Horizontal Top Tube

Postby Elbee » Wed Nov 17, 2021 7:17 pm

Hi!
So I’m on the hunt for a new secondhand bike, for cruising and longer weekend rail trail rides and I’m looking for some recommendations to keep an eye out for.
I have a weird prerequisite that I’d like a bike with a horizontal top tube... I just love the aesthetic.
I really like a lot of 80’s mountain bikes that I’ve seen, and am keeping an eye out on Facebook marketplace, gumtree etc. but I was hoping people may be able to suggest some brands/models that fit what I’m looking for, so I have some keywords to use.
Repco High Sierra is one I’d love to find... anything similar to that I can keep an eye out for?
Basically; offroad tyres, horizontal top tube, prefer pre-90’s era.
Thanks for helping with my strange (I think?) request! :D

Reddit /xbiking has a heap of old [canti] horizontal top tube steel builds like this. Many converted to drop bar. Some to 650b. Mostly US brands though.

A number of old road/touring bikes with similar frame style could clear a 700x36mm or so tyre.
MUFC

Shogun Trailbreaker or Prairie Breaker
Bridgestone MB-1 (good luck)
There was also a very cool Marin .. can't remember the model name.

Nishiki, Cannondale (M-series), Specialized and Giant were also fairly prolific.

As Owly mentions, the Reddit threads r/xBiking and also r/RetroMTB have lots of examples, mostly US-based, so expect lots of Specialized Stumpies and a few Cannondales.

FWIW, I spend a lot (too much) of my time turning classic rigid MTBs of this era into townie and rail-trail bikes and moving them on to Uni students and whomever else.
Campagnolo for show, SunTour for go

If it's going off road at all, I'd recommend ditching the aesthetic and going for practical. There is a reason mountain bikes pioneered the sloping top tube!

Thanks everyone. :)
By ‘offroad’, I just mean on the rail trail, which is lovely tight-packed fine gravel with the occasional stone cattle crossing. Nothing serious.

In that case anything that is called a Shogun Metro (find one without a suspension fork) would be fine - easy to work on with solid parts on a surprising good frame

Where are you based? I have a High Sierra, owned it since 1988.
