Deore Trekking crankset chainrings?
Postby Bentnose » Sun Oct 31, 2021 7:05 pm
Looking at replacing the 3x10 chainrings on my gravel bike, they are currently 26-36-48 which don’t seem to be all that readily available. Pushy’s have a 26T inner for a 2x10 that is $20, I assume it will fit. Amazon have a 36T middle that is $52 with delivery or from EBay (China) for a few dollars less. I’d ideally like to fit a 46T outer instead of a 48T, Amazon have the 48T for $73. Chainrings will cost $145, seems a bit expensive, think the whole crankset cost less than that, does anyone have any suggestions particularly with a 46T outer if possible?

I'm watching with interest as my commuter has the same crank - like you it seems bizarre that chainrings are relatively expensive, which I have never understood for inner & middle rings at least.
Then again have you priced a new crankset lately - since shimano implemented geo blocking, not only is availability down but prices have nearly doubled.
Maybe duck can confirm if a 9 sp 36T middle will work eg - deore fc-m510 36t (AT) $16. IIRC the rings are the same thickness & the spacing is set by the crank not the rings

Anything you can do, I can do slower

Pretty much any 104mm BCD four-bolt chainrings will work for the middle & big rings, and pretty sure it's 64mm for the small.
One thing to watch for is the distance between the bolt hole and locating step on each spider arm, and by association, the closeness of the holes the the inner edge of their chainring tabs. It can vary, even between models from one manufacturer (both Shimano and FSA at least are guilty of this) meaning sometimes you may need to file the tabs back a bit to fit.

I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Okay, so https://www.pushys.com.au/shimano-deore ... lsrc=aw.ds for the inner. https://www.pushys.com.au/shimano-deore ... lsrc=aw.ds for the middle chainring if 9 speed is okay.
The 46T is a bit harder https://www.oldschoolbmx.com.au/bmx-104 ... ade-by-mcs which is $60 with postage, it's for BMX so I'm assuming it won't work, I read something about them being too thick to allow multi speed set ups. There are 46T chainrings available on https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002 ... d8c3d98f-3 don't think the quality would be any good. Otherwise, in 48T, there is something like this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251592115070, not sure what brand this is. A genuine Shimano 10 speed one https://www.amazon.com.au/Shimano-Deore ... 2790&psc=1.
$111 for the lot, about $30 less if I get the no brand 48T from Ebay, guess it's cheaper than a whole new groupset.

BMX ring won't work. For starters it's too thick for multi-speed chain, plus it has no shift ramping or tooth shaping to facilitate shifting.

Sometimes it's cheaper, or at least easier to buy a whole crankset and just use the rings. Unfortunately out of stock now, https://www.cyclingdeal.com.au/buy/fsa- ... m/OT-CK-02
I also have a bike with a 104//64 triple and always keep an eye out for spare chainrings. Aerozine and Procraft used to sell sets but they seem to have disappeared.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that a BMX ring can never work. I've used BMX rings on several occasions for my son's road bikes to meet junior gear restrictions.
Here is a 3/32" BMX chainring on my son's new race bike (10spd chain). The lack of shifting ramps and pins is not a big issue in this case, partly because there is only a 7tooth gap between rings. (previously he has had smaller gaps)
That being said one of his previous supposedly 3/32" chainrings was a bit thicker than spec, (but narrower than 1/8"). I had to narrow the teeth down with a dremel to get them to release the inner links of the chain.
Cheers,
Cameron

Thinking of lowering my low gear a little https://www.pushys.com.au/shimano-deor ... lsrc=aw.ds , cheaper as well. Don’t understand the modern gravel bike with 30/34 low gear, that just isn’t low enough, I’ll have a 24/36.
I could always go one of these in the future https://www.suginoltd.co.jp/store/prod ... duct_id=25, not sure about square taper bottom brackets though. I have some SLX cranks that I’ll put my new rings on, should be a little lighter than Deore.
