We can't compare a handbuilt piece like a Llewellyn to mass-produced stuff like Specialized/Trek etc, it's just unfair.

The finish and quality will be worlds apart, aside from the custom fit consideration. From that perspective the Llewellyn is worth every cent of the purchase price.

I’ll bite, seeing this was just me.

S-Works are Specialize’s top model, in either the Tarmac, Roubaix or the now defunct Venge. Or the new Aethos. An S-Works Tarmac will have the same geometry as a non s-works tarmac, so they are basically the same frame.

Except they use different carbon (lighter, stronger, more expensive) to make an S-Works than a non s-works.

They also spec the S-Works out with better quality components. Stem, bar, seat post, saddle, wheel set.

There was an incident on the facebook spesh page where some guy sold another guy an 'sworks' frame but wasn't and folks were saying they were more or less identical. Can't remember what model, roubaix or venge, but most seemed to be in agreement they were practically identical frames including carbon layup, grade and mold.

But yeah my point was as others have made, paying that amount of money (if you are infact riding it) is better placed going full custom as the bike fits you like a glove.

I imagine if you have the money, going full custom on everything would be a better option. Hand made to fit shoes, clothes, suites, handbag, everything I guess.

Just think of those high end, brand name carbon bikes as a Ferrari or Lamborghini or Maserati. You can buy a bespoke, custom built car if you have the money and inclination. And if you’re a genuine car enthusiast, that might be something you would do. Otherwise some people just want a car that looks good (to them) and goes fast. The same goes for bikes.

I've always liked Ritchey bikes, so I decided to build up a Logic Disc as my next bike.

It will be full ultegra with deep rims. Everything is ordered and on it's way, except for the wheels.

The anecdotes I’ve heard are that (for similar bikes not necessarily this model) both versions will use the same carbon layup but a mix of it in places. Then they pick the lighter ones and put those in the S Works batch, and the heavier ones go in the regular batch. So they can both claim to be correct with regards to carbon content.

With respect to the thread title a flashy new thing aint that necessary.
I have 3 bikes on the go.
A Cervelo S5 bought new in 2012
A Ribble alloy and carbon fork I built up that now sits on the trainer.
The latest is a 2013 Giant TCR I built up with 5800 and 7000 105.
It has some of c r c and Wiggle house brand prime carbon wheels.
That frame cost me $450 on eBay.
I ride with plenty of people who have $6k and up bikes.
That Giant does everything theirs does and is every bit as fast.
Yeah it's second hand and yeah it's carbon.
Has a few marks and nicks on it but no evidence of hard hits.
Had the local Giant store press a bb in and the mechanic I know saw nothing to be concerned with.
16k on it since I've had it and I have reassessed my need for expensive bikes as a consequence.
Still, single wage earner with a mortgage and two young adult kids makes my circumstances different than some others also.

I’m with you warthog1 - current roadie is a 2012 Volagi Liscio, and the other bike in the shed is a 2012 GT Xizang that does dirt duties.

The only reason the Llewellyn is coming along is the money that was saved to go back OS.

Good thing you bought the cervelo when you did haha. You won't believe how many people I know that rush out to buy a fancy new bike before baby arrives!

I'm the opposite.I can trade a bike updown, left right, but the ones that I have ridden on epic adventures, very much connected to and can't bear moving them on.

Yeah the Cervelo came when we moved towns and before we bought our new house after selling the old.
Was a bit over 4k at the time. Still ride it from time to time.
Not worth a cracker second hand now after 30+k km and marks and nicks all over it.
Still rides well enough and fits like a glove.
Probably prefer the TCR though.

When I got the new S5 in my signature I got it for a very decent price, if it wasn't for that then I wouldn't have got it. I did want a disc brake bike eventually. Luck that it was available and the size was perfect, except maybe the bars (just the top section) need to be changed for some narrower ones.

It has nearly 10,000km since end of September (I think - this topic will have the exact date) last year when I got it and so far it has been very good. The pads got changed for the first time and although it was a bit fussy to do them, it's all working well.

The chain on the other hand seems like it doesn't need touching at all - still silent, no skipping or any other signs of issues. The 12 speed SRAM Red E-Tap AXS seems to be the smoothest and most silent running gear system I've come across so far out of everything I've used.

10k is way longer than I have ever got from a chain. You are a fair bit lighter though.
I am now using smoove and not riding in the rain much so it has improved however.

The pressfit BB isn't ideal but no longer a deal breaker for me.

I’m sure they’d release it with a wide range of group sets and perhaps something with ultegra di2 will be (should be) well under $10k. Then again, Cervelo only offer the one frame (unlike specialised/S-works and trek SL/SLR) so maybe it’s more expensive then a specialised tarmac SL7.

I’d be worried at how many would sell if the dura ace R6 was proved similarly to the top of the range S5. The R’s just don’t have the same sex appeal of an S and if you’re dropping $15k on a bike you want to make sure that every time you look at it you get aroused.

They are way different bikes though. I have two great road bikes, they are totally opposite. One extreme aero (S5) and the other (Canyon Ultimate CF Evo) semi aero but extremely light.

They are both awesome bikes but in different ways. You do notice how much lighter the Canyon is, no hiding that. It’s more comfortable but elsewhere the S5 is better (flat/downhill/brakes)

I suppose the rumoured R6 is similar. Of course it could just end up being an updated R5.
