New road bike. What's your desire ?

Only 300g heavier than the Canyon Ultimate CF Evo Disc (5.8kg from last year). Sad for them.

It looks okay, nothing radical aside from the weight. It's expensive - but that's the price of pushing things to extreme light weight.

The 2021 Canyon Aeroad CFR is the one that changes things up more than expected:

Agree that it doesn't seem to be anything special for the price - either weight, spec, looks or 'new ideas'.

But there will be fanboys that will be lining up ....

Oh, the framesets are only A$8k ..... There is one nice colour though ...

Innovation is a fascinating thing - will be most interesting to see if it is a commercial success. Presumably, Spec will use the leverage of their reputation for quality and success to increase its market.
Will also be interesting to see how it holds its monetary value as a used item.
And also it’s robustness against crash damage or the inevitable wear and tear of use, storage and transport.
Dare I say- it looks a bit like a nice carbon frame from the mid 2000’s, but with Disc brakes. Just a hint of “retro”
Maybe one day soon there will be a fractionally heavier variant of this frame that looks almost the same, for half the money. Like what the big Shimano does with its various models of groupsets.

It will be interesting to see how it goes. I can only say from having the Canyon super light weight frame set that it was very decent and caused no problems. I did a lot of commute riding on it. It was very trouble free and I hardly had to do anything to that bike. Just chains, brake pads, cassette and a bottom bracket replacement.

I don’t know what Specialized is doing on their frame but I understand there is scope to make that bike lighter still.

Dang this thread got me thinking. I've been enjoying my updated neo-retro steel and aluminium/CF fork Fuji do-it-all bike I've got. Felt a need to fill a 'one quick road bike for those certain times' when one of these was drawn to my attention.

Yeah, my 6700 group only cost me $400 complete, VGC used. Once I sold some other stuff it was a $0 changeover. Frame is used but presents pretty well. FD tab is a little scarred but that's easily beaten. Should have it end of the week, but will be a few weeks before it's on the road either way.

Assembled. Test/tune ride to work tomorrow (lonly a 3.5km trip). 7.95kg (without bidon, spare tube and tool pack, pump or Garmin). I reckon it will be about 8.7 with Garmin, pack and pump, and a little over 9kg with a filled large bidon. That's on alloy wheels, too. Will switch it to the carbon Tokens at some stage, although they're about the same weight. Rider is still biggest weight penalty.

I don’t know about desire - but I got to have a look at and lift a one ride only Cervelo R5ca (Project California) on Tune components (wheels, saddle, the lot). It had SRAM Red E-Tap 11 speed, sram red crankset and brakes.

It was a 54cm and about 5.5kg.

As far as I’m aware it was ridden only once then put on display. Pretty amazing to see it and handle it very, very carefully given its value and rarity.

The original build price was staggering. Something like that you don’t often see.

The frame is probably no issue but the rest of the Tune components I'm not so sure about though I might be wrong. My Canyon is by default with these QR skewers but I don't feel confident using them:

Yeah! I have developed a bit of an Covid lockdown interest in these modern bike technologies. However, I'm probably more a 1980's Euro Peugeot steel fanatic. Ah! You do realise 99.9% of Australian sold bikes are manufactured in Taiwan or China and the bikes sold here are not necessarily the cream of technology but retail sales standard for a limited market. This 2yo Twitter Cyclone was brought out by a Hong Kong immigrant and was his personal bike. It was equipped with some nice gear like OEM 4 bearing carbon disc hubs and rims. Not trying to sell anything, it is only an interest in bicycle technology. I'm sure Giant and Merida sell equal quality bikes here???

We do see a number of exotic Asian sourced and maybe touring bikes here in the Blue Mountains. Before Covid, there were some very expensive bling machines with Asian (& Japanese) riders. Recently, a friend saw an internal hydraulic brake hose and cables on a mountain bike e.g. Aero MTB.

Oh! My desire, and may happen, would be a Watley Titanium road frame to upgrade my carbon Xpace (Xiamen) 830SL (Cell Victor 2) frame, but it would have to ride and handle as sharp as my Peugeot.

It's a big world of hi-tech bikes out there and it makes great banter over coffee!

Just out of curiosity I had a look for one of those bikes:

It has lots of visible carbon weave, lots of stickers and decals indicating carbon this, carbon that, "innovation technology" and even looks like a tribute to the Trek logo on the front of the bike. I can't see anything particularly sophisticated there.

It's at a low price point though.


I'm doing some maths on various potential component upgrades for my Canyon just for interest to see how light it could go while still staying with components that are dependable/safe. At the moment it is 6030g.

Possible changes:
- Canyon H36 100/410mm (remove 380g and 38g)
+ THM Frontale (add 210g) at 949€

- SRAM Red Aerolink brakes (remove 240g)
+ THM FIBULA ROAD (add 120g) at 1230€

- Canyon S14 VCLS 2.0 seatpost (remove 220g)
+ Schmolke TLO 1K seatpost (add 81g) at 472€
or
+THM MANDIBULA (add 172g) at 549€

That would get 5700g or 5791g for 54cm size.

Another easy weight saving would be the P-Zero Velo TT tyres in 23mm, they are 155g each versus 195g for the normal P-Zero Velo in 23mm.

Unfortunately for that weight saving the cost is obscene, but is in line with what we can see with other very light weight bike projects. The THM components are beautiful and match the bike.
