Giant 2020 bikes

Postby fergy1987 » Wed Jul 10, 2019 2:57 pm

Looks like we're getting a few more 2020 bikes on the websites.

Noticed a whole heap of Contends from the SL Disc to the Contend AR

Difference seems to just be the bottom bracket, the frame material on the AR being worse and bigger tyres. I guess its a gravel bike? Not too sure.

Seems the 105 Contend SL Disc has also ditched the semi hydraulic disc brakes too which is a bonus albeit at a price increase it seems.

However yet again, the lower models have the better paint jobs :P - Giant make me want to buy a Liv just for the paint schemes lol.

I'm not really sure of the point of the Contend AR; they already have the Revolt and Anyroad to fit in the road fatbike sector.....

Not officially released yet, but leaked thanks to the UCI Approved Stuff list is a new Liv Avail, sister bike to the Defy that was launched last year. It's the only new listing for the coming year, so all the other carbon road frames carry over - those waiting for a new TCR will be waiting at least another year.

Indications show a lot more SRAM stuff on the spec sheets, which I can't say I'm overly thrilled about.

On the dirt, the Stance enrty-level dual-suspension bike gets its range extended to include a 29" wheeled option alonside the 27.5" model. I haven't seen proper details yet.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Entry level MTBs dropping 3x and going to 2x - is 3x being phased out thanks to larger range cassettes, or is it just to appeal to modern buyers wanting simplicity of shifting?

My 8 year old manages a 3x7 setup no worries but I know lots of casual riders don't like and don't really use the 3x setups.

Defy Advanced Pro 0 Red is RRP $US7,800 and in stock for M/L, L and XL on the US website.

https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/defy- ... 0-red-2020

I wonder what that translates to in AU dollars when it reaches here. Defy 2019 Advanced Pro 0 ("compact" in US was $US5,565) and $A6,699 RRP which nobody seems to pay. So plus 20%, maybe $A9,400 RRP.

Defy 2018 had 25 mm tires, Defy 2019 had 28 mm with space for 32 mm, Defy 2020 has 32 mm. At this rate it's heading towards a fat bike.

I'm looking at upgrading my Azzurri Mezzo 90 I got in February 2013 ($3,159 ... 32,700 km on it)

The Giant has many differences which are arguably upgrades
  • hydraulic disc brakes. Useful if it suddenly rains
  • tubeless tires. I hate flats
  • wireless shifting - have read it's very quiet 8) new chain tech
  • 32 mm tires ... probably more comfortable. Less likely to slip on the seed pods in Brisbane or get stuck in path grooves. Started with 23 mm on Azzurri and have 25 mm now, but it won't fit all 25 mm tyres
  • better integrated power meter Quarq Dzero - though that's arguably a downgrade over 2019 Defy (Giant PM) if it doesn't take rechargeables. I put an Infocrank on the Azzurri but the BB is not a perfect fit, and now one of the battery cover hexagonal holes has become rounded - pair of plastic covers was $59  and getting that cover off won't be easy :(
  • SRAM Red Etap AXS - gear range has everything i.e 46/33 and 10-33 12 speed vs my Ultegra Di2 50/34 and 11-32 11 speed. Can get 11-34 11 speed like on the 2019 Defy, but that has bigger gaps between gears. Bloody expensive XG-1290 cassette though, that's $570 on Pushys  10-11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-28-33 vs 11-13-15-17-19-21-23-25-27-30-34 - Ultegra 11 speed 11-34 cassette is $114 at Bikebug, one-fifth of the price
  • Bluetooth? What's that? Does it record your gear changes like the Shimano wireless unit was supposed to for me?
  • Thru-axle hubs?
Is there anything from the other manufacturers which ticks most of those boxes at a good price? Disc brakes, tubeless, electronic shifting, integrated power meter?

It's always hard to beat Giant on value for money, combined with quality of product. Unless you look at online-only brands like Ribble, Canyon, maybe Polygon? Even the well specced Canyon Endurace doesn't run tubeless as stock, or have a power meter.

USD$7800 is currently around AUD$11,000.

RRP is $10,299... maybe shop price is about 10% off that.

Popped into a bike store on the weekend for a look. Giant paint jobs are often pretty meh, but the 2020 TCR Advanced Pro 1 model is a beautiful metallic ruby red, and the 2 is a nice metallic blue.

Personally I think The Giant brand logo should have been in silver, not black, on both bikes :)

i just picked this one up today and it does look awesome, however, the cabling routing is a dogs breakfast...absolutely horrible. Going to have to re do it all and neaten it up. My propel with red etap is so much neater

I have 3 bikes now and still riding them all

i have an old 2008 fuji team RC which i just rebuilt with the latest ultegra mechanical and runs zipp 202 wheels. This one is mainly attached to my wahoo kickr and climb though these days, but still take it out every now and again\

I have a 2017 giant propel Advanced SL 0 with red etap

and now this one. Was going to get a canyon, but they had nothing i wanted in my size in stock, and this pro 1 was at a very good price so just went with it, and fits me like a glove

Beautiful bike John. Makes me want to get one now.
How are you finding the SLR wheels?
From your experience, is there any difference between buying from the official Giant store and the LBS? Better after sale service perhaps?

My personal opinion is the SLR wheels are great. I have 3 sets now,
SLR 0 55mm rim brake on my propel sl 0
SLR 1 42mm disc on the pro 1 pictured above and
SLR 1 42mm rim on my 2019 pro.

I also swap out the slr 1's with my zipp 202's and dont find much of a difference to be honest. They are nice and stiff and i havent had any issues with them flexing with out of the saddle going hard, so not brake rub.

I wouldnt swap them out thats for sure...very light weight and get rolling very quickly.

I purchased the red one from a giant store and my 2019 one from the local LBS, and to be honest, i got better service from the LBS and was much happier, also the LBS offered first 2 services for free, giant store first one only, but i wont be taking it back to them.

However in saying that, i got the propel from a giant store and couldnt speak highly enough of them.

Purchase from wherever you get the best service from
