End-of-trip facilities near SW of Melbourne CBD?

Postby Cyclophiliac » Wed Sep 20, 2017 7:32 am

I'm looking for alternative end-of-trip facilities anywhere near the SW corner of Melbourne CBD, i.e. somewhere not too far from the Spencer / Flinders intersection. Ideally, it should have
  • secure bike storage;
  • reasonable-sized locker with my own key, i.e. not one of those enter-any-combo to lock first-come-first-served types;
  • showers.
If anyone knows of any such facilities, please let me know?

Regards & thanks,

--- Victor

Good luck with that. There used to be public EoT facilities somewhere on Swanston St but these were shut for the metro tunnel works.

RACV Club has just opened up end of trip facilities (https://www.racv.com.au/travel-leisure/ ... y-hub.html).

End of trip facilities near SW of Melbourne CBD

Our work is designing end of trip facilities for a client. They are wanting to have 150 bike racks, does anyone have an idea of the ratio of bike racks to showers? Obviously 150 racks is a lot of space, so its difficult to fit showers, lockers etc in the space given.

Bruce - this is a new building being built in Brisbane: https://brisbanedevelopment.com/commerc ... ring-hill/

It's of some interest to me because my organisation my be moving there when it is opened. Anyway, the magic numbers from that link are:

* 196 bicycle spaces within the basement level and 63 visitor bicycle parking spaces within the basement and ground level outdoor terrace
* 203 lockers, 42 showers, 6 toilets and 2 PWD toilet/shower facilities within the basement level

My current building has a gym, bike parking and showers/lockers (2 of, one for each mainstream gender choice :shock: ) Each of these areas has about the same floor space. The shower/locker space have two "aisles", i.e. four long "walls". One is dedicated to showers/toilets/basins (3:1:1 ratio), two to lockers and one to towels, drying cupboards, lost property and bench space. ABC News 24 is shown on a large TV (or two).

The towels are provided by the building "free" (along with hair driers and drying cupboards). As a building manager, I would not want to have people bringing their own towels.

I'm surprised you're not out visiting all the existing EOTF facilities in the area, for reference..

We've got space for 600 bikes and 30-40 male showers. Assuming the same for females. Never have to queue for a shower, but we have waiting lists for lockers as well as a waiting list for the waiting list.

Some buildings have a mixture of permanent lockers and weekly lockers.

wow .. that's a lot!
what's the occupancy rate like? how many of the racks actually get used?

our office has 5 levels. my guess is 300 employees?
of which, < 10 actively commute by bike. (will be interesting to see if the number goes up when the Macqurie Park train line is closed in Sept)

i think we have enough bike space for 40 bikes but they hardly get used. (this is in Sydney btw)

The lockers are very popular with employees who participate in lunch-time soccer, boot camps, etc.. so there's always a high demand for lockers.

My building has 194 bike spaces, with 104 lockers, and 10 showers in the male toilets. I tried to do a complete count but I was escorted out. :)

Even in winter we have about 90 bikes being used for commuting, many of whom don't have/need lockers.

There is a waiting list for lockers, because they are used by the lunch time exercise folk.

I don't use the change rooms at peak times so I don't know whether 10 showers is the right number. I've never seen more than 3 in use at one time.

Cheers,

Cameron

My work provides a locker, shower and bike storage for staff (Flinders st) nearest alternative i know of is the Arts centre which have a large lock up cage for bikes.
Best facility i have seen so far are in Footscray, we need to encourage this at the campus on Flinders street campus and other work places in melbourne.

Worth noting the state government funded these hubs and the Uni provided the space for their construction, so is possible other companies in the city could do the same.
